Re: Air / Oil Separator -> Engine Corrosion
here's a link to the field approval that I obtained for installing the collection bottle on my air/oil separator:http://johnpropst.yolasite.com/resources/337FA%20air%20wolf.pdf I tried adding a photo of the bottle but apparently the photo que is full. It is just a semi-transparent plastic bottle mou...

Re: Air / Oil Separator -> Engine Corrosion
Matt, I have a air/oil separator on my Champ with a C-85. Instead of routing the sludge/water line back to the engine, I routed it to an externally mounted clear plastic bottle to collect the sludge and water. I tend to get more water in the winter versus summer. My oil and cylinder temp does run hi...

Re: Finishing tape at the aft of Champ rear window frame
On the original Champs and as shown on the drawings, the fabric was wrapped around and glued to the window frame. The window was then installed and finishing tape was used between the fabric and the window, i.e. the window is glued to the fabric. This makes a nice waterproof joint but it takes some ...

Compass Mount
The vertical card compass in my Champ has become unreliable and inaccurate. I am replacing it with a conventional SIRS navigator compass. I would like to "glue" it directly to the windshield. It comes with a 3-M VHB adhesive pad and application kit. The instructions indicate that it can be...

Re: Cleveland Brake Lines
Here's a link to an article that I wrote on installing hydraulic toe brakes on my Champ. There are photos of the bulkhead that I made to transition through the fabric. http://johnpropst.yolasite.com/resources/Aeronca%20Champ%20Hydraulic%20Toe%20Brake%20Conversion%20h.pdf if, for any reason you canno...

The following link is for an article on oil sumps that Bill Pancake and I wrote. It may help answer a few of your questions.

Re: Oleo Tool
One detail to keep in mind if you're using the safety wire method to retain the compressed spring is to only loop the end of the safety wire under one coil of the spring on each end, ie the safety wire does not run down the inside of the spring from one end to the other. If you do run the safety wir...

Re: Oleo Tool
Nice design Mike. I'll have to make me one. Certainly looks a lot faster and safer than safety wiring the spring. I'll update the oleo article with your photo. Thanks.

Re: Weight and Balance
I have a bit of a concern in reading though this thread, that someone may get the impression that having accurate weight and balance data is not important and that it is OK to push the weight limits, especially with some of the increased power options. While these aircraft may be somewhat forgiving ...

Re: Backup Artificial Horizon
Richard, Since all the data is derived from the IPhone or IPad gps and gyro, my guess is that it is actually displaying ground speed and not airspeed. I found that there is almost an endless collection of aircraft instruments on itunes. While I have not tried any of these apps, there is quite a vari...

Backup Artificial Horizon
If you fly a simple plane and wish that you had a cheap backup artificial horizon, you may want to look into the Apple app “Pocket Horizon Pro”. It costs about $10 and runs on an IPod, IPhone, or IPad. I tried it out this morning on an IPhone with an external “Dual” Bluetooth gps. The application pe...

Re: Rear strut???
Paul, Prior to recovering my wings, I mounted the wings on the aircraft, adjusted the washout, and connected all the rigging (Bill Pancake insisted that I do this prior to covering, and in hindsight, I’m glad I did). While the wings were mounted and aligned, I took several pieces of cardboard and ma...

Re: lasher stc SA232SO
As one data point on my C85-12 with the O-200 STC upgrade, at 2325rpm, 75hp, my fuel flow is 4.5 gph. I typically cruise at 2300 - 2400 rpm which results in a fuel flow of 4.5 to 5.0 gph. Fuel flow on takeoff is 7.0 gph. Data is from a JPI 830 engine monitor.
