Restoring an Old A-65-8F
I need to replace my Lycoming O-145 and found an old A-65-8F on ebay.
It looks like it sat for a long time and has no logs.
Question: can this engine be overhauled and restored to service?

Re: Fuel line replacement
I should have updated this thread after I replaced the fuel line. My local A&P formed one and I installed it -- been working great!

Re: Chief Cabin size?
I'm 6'1", 190 and fit into my pre-war Chief. I can't fly it longer than 2 hours without getting cramped. 1.5 is normal, comfortable max.
With 65 HP I really can't take another 200 lb person and have fuel.

Aeonca Ad in Quebec (Circa 1950)
My Uncle Ulric (now 85) mailed me this last month: http://flightmusings.blogspot.com/2012/02/1950-aeronca-ad.html It shows a C-3 but he said he had his heart set on a Chief. I'd love to fly up to Quebec and give him a ride! Anyone crossed into Canada and back in a non electric, non-transpondered bir...

Re: Lycoming 0-145
Here's an O-145 question:
I have one Rocker Box cover stud with a few missing threads. Castle nut can be secured, but not torqued enough and so there is a nuisance oil leak.
So here's the question: Can I manufacture a suitable replacement for this stud by cutting the head off a 10-32 Machine screw?

Was able to get out again this morning -- another gorgeous day! If this is "global warming," then let's have more!

Re: Gorgeous January Morning over Lancaster County
Hi Dan, Do you know Jerry Rosey and his Chief? He is based just outside of Harrisburg. He holds a CAP and an Aeronca Fly-In of sorts each year. I know a little about the Lancaster Area. I was married to a girl from Harrisburg for 23 years and had an office in PA when I was with St. Regis Paper Comp...

Re: Gorgeous January Morning over Lancaster County
Hi Dan, Where is Smoke Town, PA? I normally fly on Monday's or Tuesday's as I work most weekends. This coming week it will be Tuesday. We should meet for lunch one day if you fly during the week at all. Regards, Robert Smoketown is just east of Lancaster city in Lancaster county, PA. Sometimes i ge...

Gorgeous January Morning over Lancaster County
We've had a very nice winter so far here in Eastern PA. This weekend is another beauty, so I flew this morning and enjoyed flying low and slow over the Lancaster county farmland.

Re: Tempest Plug Sockets
Dan, I use a Craftsman 6pt. deep socket. Some of the others don't broach the socket deep enough, even the expensive ones. Champion sells one but I found the Craftsman is about as thin as they get. Some of the Cubs and little Lycomings need the thin sockets to get through the eyebrows. Paul Great in...

Tempest Plug Sockets
I have Tempest Plugs in my Lycoming O-145-b2 (REM37BY, 5/8” plugs, 18mm threads). But I'm having an awful time finding the right socket for these plugs! Aircraft Spruce has the right size, but has this note: T-557 3/8” drive without magnet PN 12-00710 T-558 1/2” drive without magnet PN 12-00712 Not ...

It's a CGI-fest that is anachronistic and shallow.rkittine wrote:What did you think? I have read a number of books about the Airmen and hope that the movie is more than just a glamorized "Based" on a true story.
