Check the bolts holding the carb on to the spider. I've seen them fall off while in use, and suck air, making a very lean mixture.

My advice is to fix it on the ground. If an engine isn't running well, flying it isn't the answer. They rarely fix themselves in the air, and it gets very quiet when the big fan stops turning....

Just have the owner participate in building the new fuselage. Owner helps = owner produced part. Just use one small piece of the old fuselage, and wha-lah.... new fuse.

We have an API tailwheel on our Champ too. Works great, but the solid hard rubber wheel doesn't give much shock dampening. If API sells a pneumatic tail wheel, I'd go for that one over the hard rubber one. The best selling factor is that these units are so very inexpensive.

Those little squeezed-between-flange nuts can be a headache, but keep on trying. I heated and bent an open end wrench into an "L", and made a wrench that would work, but still, it sure isn't easy. Putting it back on is nearly as hard as taking it off. At least it is not something you commo...

If it was me, I'd split the case and major the engine. Sure the engine is pretty much bullet proof, but after 30 years... don't you think its really done its job? In aviation, it is always the rule to err on the side of caution. FIX the engine, don't patch it. Just my 2c worth.

You guys are doing a really beautiful job on your Champ. While I might be in the minority, I like your paint scheme much better than the original. Where are you from?

In my opinion, 8:50x6 tires are too heavy and too stiff for small Air Knockers. You would also see a marked airspeed loss. I have a set of the 8:50's on a 180hp Supercub. I saw a 10 mph loss when compared to 7:00's. 8:50's are quite heavy as well, and the sidewalls are pretty stiff, so don't expect ...
