The owner of the Champ I'm presently recovering apparently has a STC (from Buzz Wagner) to install a 0200 Continental. He (the owner) is an AI and has a rebuildable 0200 that he's intending to install. I believe he's going non-electric, the last I heard. My understanding is that it's pretty much a bolt in conversion, but there is some extra beefing up required in the motor mounts, etc. Are there any "pit falls" we should be aware of? I'm thinking of stuff like throttle linkages, air cleaners, etc. I'm sure the STC spells some of this out, but I've converted enough stuff in my life to know that not everything is easy. Anyway, if any of the group out there has a Champ that they've converted to a 0200 and has anything to pass on....good or bad... we'd like to hear about it, before we go too much further. The other option is a C85, I think. Just trying to save the headaches.
Thanks...Mike.

Mike,
It is straight forward except for the motor mount, that is, if you intend to build the one included in the Buzz STC. The STC motor mount calls for a certain size tube to accomodate the 7/16 bolts used on the older engines. The mounting of the 0200 with Lord mounts requires a 3/8 bolt. So if you build the motor mount as spec in Buzz drawing, the holes will be too large. When I told Buzz about the descrepancy, he said, "You must be using a late model 0200." I asked him several questions about how to resolve the problem and he simply said ..."anything you want to do". It was obvious to me that he was aware of the problem and did not give a damn. Sorry, I digress.
The fix was simple. You can buy tubing with an ID of 3/8+ and an OD of 1/2. Using a .492 reamer, I cleaned out the hole and pressed in the undersize one. Or if you have not built the mount yet, use the proper size tube for the 3/8 bolt.
Also, you must fab a spacer for the carb to airbox. Be sure to use your old airbox and not the 0200 airbox.
Hope this helps. Dennis

O-200 conversion
When I converted my Clipped Wing Cub to an O-200 it moved everything forward about 3/4" so all of a sudden I had a fit problem with my cowling - just something else to watch out for.--BJ

Thanks for the information. Just what I was looking for.........pitfalls....
I won't be building the mount. I'll leave that to the owner who is a AI.
Sounds like your experience with Buzz is about the same as everyone elses........not much communication.
