Baffle kit

Post by ChampChump »

I did try searching through the threads, but unable to find this particular item, I'm appealing to the cognoscenti hereabouts.

I'm thinking of buying Wag-Aero's Baffle Kit (#M-170-000) to replace my scruffy stuff, but just had a dumb thought. Will it be right for the C85 in my Champ?
International shipping (or using friends'n'family) means I don't want to be even dumber, Chumpier, than usual....

Many thanks

THE M-170-000 AERONCA STYLE BAFFLE KIT FROM WAG AERO WILL NOT WORK ON YOUR CHAMP WITH A C-85 ENGINE. I CAN ALSO BE CONTACTED BY PHONE AT 1-800-558-6868 EXT 142.

Mike,

Are the baffles on the -12 engine the same as the -8 or are they different? There are enough of us out here with the -12 engine that I thought I would ask.

Thx,

Joe

When I upgraded from a 65 to the 85 I used the original baffles but had to do some trimming around the front where they meet the nose bowl.

Joe, I think it would be the same regardless of dash number, but a good question.

Unless Wag changed the material they use for the baffles, I would do some looking around.

ENGINE BAFFLES FOR C-85-12 ENGINE

Post by MIKE UTLEY »

HELLO JOE, IN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION ON BAFFLES FOR A C-85-12 ENGINE I CAN NOT SAY FOR THAT THE BAFFLES FOR THE -8 ENGINE WILL FIT A -12 ENGINE AS THERE ARE NO DRAWINGS OR SERVICE LETTER THAT I KNOW OF FOR THE C-85-12 ENGINE IN A CHAMP. BUT SINCE THE BAFFLES DON'T GO AROUND THE ACCESSORY DRIVE I DON'T SEE WHY THEY WOULDN'T FIT. IN REFERENCE TO THE M-170-000, THIS IS AN AERONCA STYLE BAFFLE SYSTEM. IT IS NOT A PMA'D ITEM AND NOT MADE EXACTLY TO THE AERONCA DRAWINGS.
WE DO HAVE BAFFLES THAT ARE PMA'D AND MADE TO THE ORIGINAL AERONCA DRAWINGS ECXEPT WE HAVE UPGRADED TO RUBBER BAFFLE SEAL MATERIAL, HELD ON BY FABRIC RIVETS, INSTEAD OF FELT AND STAPLES.

THANK YOU MIKE UTLEY

Thanks, all. It seems to be a suck-it-and-see result, but given the nature of the material, nothing seems to be impossible... :)

Mike

Are you the "go-to guy" at Wag-Aero for all things Aeronca Champ? I just ordered some nails and screws for my Champ wing and I spoke with a tech guy that the sales lady forwarded me to. That may have been you.

I want to add you to my call list if I may. My project has a lot of new components from Wag-Aero including two 5.5 gal wing tanks. I will install a C-85-12F in it so the baffle kit is something I will need.

The C-85 baffles are quite abit different than the 65 baffles. The 65 crankcase baffles have to be butchered quite a bit to fit the wider 85 engine. On the 65, the side/front baffles are one piece that get twisted to form a complex curve in the transition from side to front. They sit vertically on top of the vave covers. On the 85, you have the rear baffles, which are made different, the side baffles that mount/sit horizontally about half way down the valve covers and front baffles. Diffetent animals, to allow more air flow over the engine. Will the 65 baffles work? Have seen several 85's with 65 baffles. Don't know, but have not heard any heat complaints.

Used the same baffles when I changed the 65 to an 85 3 years ago. Some adjustment was needed but no heating problems encountered. We are in a temperate 40's to 70's range.

Baffles

Post by Tim Juhl »

When I installed a C85-12 (lasher STC) in place of my A65-8 I retained the original baffles. Very little was required to get them to fit. I replaced the felt seal with silicone which I shaped (with silicone adhesive) to make a good seal with the cowling. My C85 actually tends to run cool. The only time I see oil temps around 190 is when the air temp is around 90.

240 hours and three years on the engine as of today.

Belated update to add that the baffles were fitted without too much trauma and have settled in fine.

Now to think about the cream-crackered carb....

Getting there slowly. :)

I built a set of baffles for the new engine in my L16. I made templates so if anyone needs some let me know.

What in the he11 is a cream-crackered carb?
