Aileron Roll

Post by Dennis D'Angelo »

Jody has got the technique down...so follow his lead. Remember the engine will definitely sputter when you approach the inverted position, so start with the nose high to compensate when the power drops as the engine momentarily quits. Don't worry the engine should relight as you get the positive G-loading back on; however, always fly acro over an intended landing area. Oh yes, expect a little gas out of the gas cap vent as you hit the inverted position and you get a little light in the seat..the smell will keep you coming back for more Aeronca acro. Fly smart, fly smart and fly alot.

Don't worry, Mike. 2 1/2 G's pulling up so it won't come out of your mouth until you are in neutral G going over the top. Then it will go to the headliner, which is now the floor. You don't have to worry until you level out at the bottom.
When I only do 1 loop, I actually end up @50 higher than I started and end right at cruise rpm. 11 is the most I have done in a row. Have to start higher, as I unload the wings, over the top, which increases the descent speed, allowing a good entry for the next one.
What if it stalls inverted? It just comes right on around and you would never know you stalled except for the bump, when it stalls, and the mushy controls when you try to recover fom the dive.

loops

Post by big chief 48 »

hi, maybe this is a strange question, but being stuck on ski's --could a loop still be attempted. I'm inclined to say yes due to the low surface area of the ski's and check cables on the ski's that would keep them from flpping around too much...????

Speaking of John Mohr, here's a great video of his amazing performance. You really must see him fly!

Also, here's a "movie" I did way back in college in my Champ. It features angle of attack as applied to flying techniques. This was shot in the Spring of 1976. It got me an A in Physics lab. Rudy

I wonder if there are any tank engine parts in his? Looks like it has just a little more power or less weight than the stock one I played with. Maybe it was my poor piloting skills. :(
But I'm really looking forward to trying out the 450 Stearman we are covering in the shop. I have been told that with 450 hp you can watch the sunset, then go up and watch it again. The down side is 17 gph slow cruise (110 to 120 mph) 50 gph wide open  Mark

I don't know how many gallons of oil per hour it uses in flight, but it holds 8.5 gallons and it leaks like a sive when its not running. I even drained all the oil, removed the sump, removed the oil tank, and stood on one foot while reading the F.A.R.'s backwards and it still pee's on the floor. :D
