someone wanted the STC to shorten the wings on a champ. Includes 2 6.5 gal wing tanks and an 0-200.

Jody,
I'm looking into this for a future project. I received a set of new spars that had a 1/8" plywood doubler on the butt end. When I cut the ends off to save the remaining spar I plan to build the clip wings.

Jody,

I would try to reach him now as most of these STC's are from the 1950's and the people who got them are "leaving the pattern" at a fast rate.

This is one thing that we all need to keep an eye on. If we find a descent STC that we feel that should be saved, then pls bring it up and lets try to contract the owner and make sure that should they be in bad health or pass away that the STC will be passed down to someone who will make it available to everyone in the future.

I'll find the FAA guy to email as the FAAis in the process of maybe doing away with all abandoned STC and type certificates as they call them. It will put old airplanes in a bind--and will have only the experimental way to go.

Elton used to hang around Harvey Field and there are a couple of clipped wing Champs that have been there over the years. One is based there right now. I can't find his phone number in the Snohomish phone book.

Cannot find him listed in the FAA database or phone book.

Anyone interested in saving this STC, pls send a letter to him NOW. If he "heads West" without anyone showing any interest in the STC, it will pass to the FAA and be gone forever.

Joe, Jody and crew. I have contemplated building the Clipped wing version of the Champ for many years. I have sent Elton George numerous letters, without reply. If my information is correct, what he did in his conversion is cut almost 40" off the root end of the wing, slide all the ribs outboard, giving you a rib every 8 inches as I remember, and then planing the spars, and installing the plates at the attached end of the wing. This makes for a VERY robust wing, yet maintaining the original round wing tip (something I personally like on the Champ)...
The Late Great Harold Krier once stated "he thought a great little performer would be a 90 Horse Champ with Clipped Taylorcraft wings", this would not only give you the shorter wings, but a very symetrical wing as well...
I hope that someone can get the STC to keep it available. Perhaps the NAA should Politic to get ownership of some of these older STCs, and Field Approvals... Hmmm. You guys are doing great job Keep it Going...

Derek Landstrom started working in that direction with his Champ during a rebuild. He did a lot of research and could probably let you in on some of the details. From what he told me, it was going to be a great little airplane. Look him up in the member list.
