Goodyear brakes grabbing

Sorry to bother everybody again. now my r/f brake has a pulsating/grabbing deal going on, it kinda feels like it is warped??? any ideas before I go buy a new disc and expensive clips???

They might be dirty. As simple as that seems, many old brakes have a habbit of self-energizing when dust and other crap gets into the system. Spray them down really good with brake cleaner and see if that fixes the problem. I always like to start with the simlest and easiest answer before tearing into a project.

Make sure that all your clips are in and seated correctly. If they are not then the disk can get cocked a bit and then it would move around, which is not good.

As Nathan mentioned, check the disk for being corroded or having a rusty spot. I silicone the ends of the clips in place on my Good Years to keep them in place. Actually if the brakes are out of adjustment (loose) that also allows the disk to wobble around, too. I generally adjust them as tight as possible without dragging (at the calipers) and that seems to work best. But my first guess is a bad spot on the rotor disk.

Having said that: they do tend to vibrate (pulse) a bit but they shouldn't rattle your teeth out either. They aren't that bad of a braking system once you get the bugs out.

Ok, I cleaned the brake components and adjusted everything still grabs, I put the rotor on a brake lathe at my shop and it does have some exc essive runout..I assume I cannot cut these (like a car rotor) to true it up, if so does anyone have the min specs?? and where can I buy one new or used that is in good shape? I also broke a clip reinstalling, expensive breakage I assume.

You can find them on Ebay from time to time.

Wish that we could find someone to make a batch of them, as we sure could use them.

I doubt there's a minimum spec on the Good Year rotors. I'm guessing they used to just replace them, although I'm sure it has been tried

. I see there's some Good Year parts on EBAY right now (under Aeronca) but unsure of what they fit.

It would be nice if someone would come up with a chromed disk for these old birds (and at a 'reasonable' price). If you beg

someone on this site may have a extra clip or two as some of the GY's have been replaced with hydrualic Cleveland's. Expensive, but nice.

Ok, so I have realized my bird is grounded over a DISC!!! the pulsation from the brake is jerking the oleo around BAD. I own a reputable shop in maryland www.showtimeautomotive.com, www.atomicautosports.com. I am new here and have to earn some trust, but I am sure I can get my machine shop to tool up and make them.. The more people on board the more affordable they become.

As for the brakes on ebay right now, I am pretty sure they are the wrong size, as the part numbers do not match..

You as the owner are allowed to make some spare parts for your Aeronca, especially if they are not available any longer.

What the exact stipulation is on these I do not know, and hope that others can help. Problem is getting the specs on the disk to make new ones, then getting them chromed and so on, but it could be done with a good machine shop. Believe that you also have to have the blueprint and not sure that Goodyear would give that out.

Also, if you make parts like this you CANNOT sell them to anyone, its just not allowed under this "owner made parts" law. I do know of people who made some of their own brake clips and the machine shop that made them said that the cost is the same if you make 100 or 1000 of them, so they made extras... a lot of extras. I have heard of people giving these away and asking for a donation to cover the postage and believe that this would be legal but not sure.

You will learn that when owning and working with 70 year old airplanes, you can get very creative, especially if you have a machine shop or know someone who does!

quick 46, are you using the flat clips or the u type clips. also have some used spare discs, you can have a couple for shipping,not real pretty but some are usable. univair has a couple new disc for about $480.00 each. new cal aviation has 1 new disc for about $450.00. spruce wants $160.00 each for the u clips, pt#9523482. the interchangable pt #9523937 is $16.85 each. since you have a machine shop. call me and I will tell you how to get new discs for about $75.00. my cell phone # is 912 309 4791. Why couldn't you true up a disc on the lathe? Hell, if that was the fix and I had the equipment, I'd sure do it.
