7ac fuel shut off valve
When the original Imperial fuel shut off valve is no longer in good shape and is in need of replacing, what is the most common replacement valve or replacement fix? It has been repaired many times and continues to leak. Thanks.

D'ont give up. They are made oiut of unobtainium. Try lapping the valve. For more info go to www.aeronca.westmont.edu and ask the same question. This subject was discussed there a while back.

Ball valves are the best choice for this application. Cheap, last forever , won't leak at 100 psi. and you don't have to be a knuckle dragger to turn them on and off. That's what I have on my uncertified Champ. Not sure they are legal for certified aircraft. Figure that out? Ron
Before you believe anything I say, check with two more people. If they agree, I must be right.

If you use a ball valve, make sure it is for Gas......not water. See the
tag on the valve for use.

Thanks. A ball valve is what I expected. Of course, to be certified it must be the poor Imperial valve. I don't know of a simple valve that is certified for that replacement. There are certified valves, but the Aernoca type certificate does not accept a change. Causes one to choose between being safe or being certified. Doesn't make sense does it? Am I missing something?
dgellisor,
A gent on the fAA email list (Carl White in Texas) is trying to get a ball valve certified for use on the Aeronca's. If he does he will earn the friendship of all the Aeronca owners worldwide, as this is a problem that we all have seen in the past.
Since you are not a registered member, where are you located? I understand that if you are in Canada you can use a ball valve legally.

I just repaired my gas valve yesterday iaw carl whites instructions taken out of the last issue of the aeronca aviator page 12, very easy to do, the only thing that might be hard to obtain if you don't already have it is: fuel proof lubricant. also if tour repairing your gas guage at the same time you might go to www.harrys early ford parts.com lot of good stuff there. ps: be very careful removing the valve from the tank!!! use a penetrating catalyst to loosen things up or you might distort the tank. Thanks. I am in Texas and sent my membership request in a couple of months ago. Don't know what has happened to my application and check. No number or place to call. Will be registered someday.
I have read about the attempt to get a replacement valve certified. Good luck on that. I guess I am a little OCD about that valve and rod assembly. Very thin rod and attachments, the tighter the valve to stop seeps, more pressure on the rod assembly. It just keeps me concerned if the valve is fully opened each time. I would like the confort of a smooth, sure feel of opening and closing. I am sure there are many that feel as I do. I probably will use a good aviation quality ball valve for safety until some certified replacement is available. I have had enough of seeps, smell of fuel, poor operation, etc. Wondering if the prop may stop on take-off. The FAA needs to get on with certifying a replacement; not a big deal. Surely there is a need to expidite this.

Did not mean your NAA membership, which I assume has been taken care of, but putting your information on this forum. When you fill it out it shows where you live and such and gives us a idea of what you are working with (FAA or CAA) and such.
Have just sent an email in to the other people on the board of directors and will get back to you on your NAA membership. You can always use: nationalaeroncaassociation@yahoo.com to contact us anytime!
Hope you get the valve working ok!
