AD List

Post by powers »

Where can I find a list of all the ADs for the 7AC Champ? Someone told me aeronca.com had a list but I didn't see it.

Also, on the same site you need to check the AD's for all things like the engine, prop, mags, carb, airfilter, elt, safety belts, mag switch, tailwheel, and main tires, tubes & on & on.

Need to make a list and find where it was signed off and how complied with, and when it is due again. Do not just think that the AD date is 1947 that it was done.

You and your AI can go through the aircraft and come up with a list of items.

I've started the process of doing that tonight. Its going to be a long process to, because the project didn't come with log books. The first question I have is about the wing spar AD. The cracks in my spars is what started all this. Someone told me that going back with solid spars eliminates the inspection part of the ad. I didn't see that in the ad though. Is that true? Also, do I have to put the extra inspection wholes in the wing. Now that I have the new solid spars?

You inspect the spars when you put them in new--no further inspection unless you have a mishap--would suggest putting inspection rings in the wings per the AD in case you/or someone have to do an inspection later. This assuming you have a 65 /75/or 85 hp Champ. You can get al the AD's by going to www.FAA.gov.

Ya, I didn't see any information about the inspection whole layout in the AD. I have to go look again.

Correction to last post--it was done late at night-

You inspect the spars when you put them in new--no further inspection unless you have a mishap--would suggest putting inspection rings in the wings per the AD in case you/or someone have to do an inspection later. This assuming you have a 65 /75/ 85/90 hp Champ. You can get al the AD's by going to www.FAA.gov which is original AD 98-05-04 and is superceded by AD 2000-25-02-R1.
The cause of these AD's were cracked spars on the aerobatic airplanes-- which are the Group 2 airplanes on the AD--but all were indicated I guess by manufactuerer type and the fact that some folks do aerobatics in Group 1 airplanes.

It is a one time inspection on Group 1 airplanes unless there is a mishap and an annual inspection on Group 2 airplanes.

The inspection layout is in the services letter--namely #406 referred to in the AD and shows areas referrred to As Required--not set in stone.

The AD has caused confustion and wonder among owners and mechanics that have no wood experience. This causes some airplanes to look like flying inspection covers.

So basically, I have a decision to make as to whether or not I put the inspection covers on or not. My airplane falls into group 1.

Powers,

If you are at all on the fence, glue the inspection hole cover rings on the wing before painting and do not cut them out. That way you do not have to cut them out until needed and it does not look as bad as having covers everywhere.

Personally as long as you have the smaller engine on the plane I would inspect it every 3-4 years and leave it alone.
