I did not take any pictures but one of the guys in our group did. He is going to give me a copy of the pictures on a cd and i will post.
Did not hear anything about searches.
I and my group arrived at Oshkosh about 10:30 am this past Thursday. We departed yesterday morning. Compared to last year, very few planes arrived on Thursday and Friday . Our group started to speculate that attendance would be down significantly this year. Saturday, however, was a different story. Planes were just fogging in. Sunday was also busy.
Parking was a problem due to soft ground created by the abnormal rains the prior week. One Mooney, who arrived on Wednesday, experienced a three blade prop strike when his nose wheel sunk into the mud in the middle of the grass taxiway. A number of parking areas were closed due to soft ground. A number of planes with small nose wheels had to be pulled out of the mud. A US Customs jet got stuck in the mud after exiting 36. North 40 camping was full by noon on Monday but I think this was due to several large areas being roped off due to soft ground. So attendance may indeed be off this year. Maybe 10 to 20%, just a guess.
There was, however, a significant lack of attendance in the fly-market. Many "spaces" were not filled. Atlantic Air Salvage was the only used parts vendor present, other than the Aeromart of course. Plenty of pots and pans, knifes, shoes and cloths for sale
There were a lot more go-a-rounds this year. I do not know if it was due to the traffic volume or new controllers but, as of yesterday, it was a "safe" Oshkosh. The controllers do a hell of a job. I heard, however, that two people died in a crash off the east end of 27 today.
There were only two incidents which I witnessed. The first was a Piper tail dragger who was almost stopped when he suddenly ground looped the plane. After about 15 seconds of sitting still, he collected his senses and taxi away. An experimental came in rather hot carrying power. His first touchdown with power produced a huge puff of smoke from his tires. Apparently his brakes were set. He continued to carry power and proceeded to make a half a dozen or so touch downs, each producing blue smoke from the tires. As he approached the end of 27, the nose gear failed and he slid to a stop. I assume at that point, he reduced power.
Then on Monday, there was the customary arrival of wrong way Carrigan. We were all watching the approach to 27 when the controller started directing everyone to go-a-round. Then a Cherokee (I think) flew by on 9 apparently aiming at the green dot which is what, maybe 2000 from the threshold of 27. I may be mistaken, but I think the controller cleared him to land when everyone got out of his way. May be wrong on this point, we were not listening closely to the radio at this point. We watch "Carrigan" turn off the runway to the north.
Made a couple of little purchases, not much to speak of. Needed more money. There was a bright red wrecked Citabria in the AeroMart, did not check the price.
This was my 22 trip to Oshkosh since 1983, I think.

Just got back from Oshkosh around noon (Friday). It seemed to me that there were still a lot of people and planes around. This is the first time I've flew my Champ in and camped (Ugh, you'll see why later 
) I don't believe I've ever missed Oshkosh but I usually drive...around a three hour trip for me from the other side of the state. I flew my Cherokee in once and flew in with a friend of mine who owned a 'Mouseketter' at the time. It is much larger and more of a flea market than it used to be but I still enjoy going.
The Champ tied down in the Vintage area. Note the large economy sized tent that used to belong to my son (now well over 6 foot which is why I inherited it). At this point, I remember why I disliked camping. When I blew up the air mattress my nose just about hit the ceiling. Not to mention I had to back in and old guys have to get up for a trip once or twice each night. I know: I could have sprung for a bigger tent but this one was available at the time and I thought I'd give it a 'try'. Now I've tried it

What do I like about Oshkosh:
You meet so many nice people, especially if you have a vintage plane. Lot's of questions and some even took pictures. I was concerned about how I was going to prop the Champ when it was time to leave but a nice fellow who used to fly a Citabria offered to sit in the seat, stand by the throttle while I propped (that is a problem when you're away from your home field).
I usually work the vendors: sort of a one stop shop for nuts, bolts, screws, clecos and various tools. I had so many this time I sent them home with a friend of mine to prevent overloading the Champ.
New ideas and products: two came to mind.......Superflite has a new CD out that looks real good on covering. They couldn't sell it at Oshkosh as they don't have a Wisconsin tax number but I'm ordering one next week.
Also, looked at the Stewart waterborne covering system. It appears very good and I've heard some good reports on it. Personally, I think they're way ahead of the curve as the solvent based products are getting more expensive and new EPA regulations are getting tougher. Looks promising, anyway.

This is the first time I've ever rode the tram systems. I like to walk but my legs don't anymore, besides it a long way to double bubble at Frair Tucks after a long hot day.
Workshops once in a while for new ideas.
And, of course, OD'ing on airplanes. Especially checked out the L16's.
Dislikes: Hot! Hot! Hot! "nuff said".
Landing in a 90 degree cross wind in front of 10,000 people. They could just as well gave me runway 27 but instead I had 36 with about 15 knots.
Can't wait until next year, but I think I'm going to enjoy my own bed tonight.

Well, on the covering front - I have to say, I am still a fan of godd old fashioned Butyrate.
Just done 2 jobs on old aeroplanes, one a recover of a tailplane on my buddy's Tiger Moth - Randolph matched the 25 year old paint absolutely perfectly - well done.
Second - I think I have sold my Citabria - I am doing some titivating as they say here in the old country.
Using Randolph rejuvinator and thin dope to roller on a new coat over the old - working really well. All the surface cracks are melting away in front of my eyes and when it's dry - it polishes up like new.
Try do that with your fancy high fallutin' water based stuff !
Now, I am having difficulty focussing, my headache is killing me and I am sure I just saw a pink frog............ Nah, just dope fumes - hic !

Nope it's still in the hanger. It's listed on ebay item #300247682774 over 600 views and 38 have it on the watched list however, no bids. I refuse to sell it for less $22,000. Especially after it only burned 3 guarts of oil over 19 hours to and from Oshkosh with me pushing hard to fight a headwind all the way home.
I'm already having selling remorse and it hasn't sold yet...........so no hard feeling from me if it doesn't sell. Besides Jody and the other Aeronca guys I met at Oshkosh are pretty neat guys who probably won't want to hear about my biplane if my Chief sells.
