I have found brass replacement screens at "Tractor Supply" if you have one of these stores in you area you might check it out. Jack
I was very surprised to find nothing in my carb screen even though the gascolator has no screen? Then I realized that both the inlet and outlet ports are at the top of the gascolator.
Evidently all the contaminants in the fuel fall to the bottom and are drained out each time I check for water, or there are none in my fuel-not likely?
So the big question is, of what benefit is the screen at the top of the gascolator??

Joe, I think you have that backwards or I'm reading it wrong; Fuel comes out of the tank into the gascolator bowl, then exit's the gascolator through the screen and into the carb. But you bring up a good point; if you notice a large amount of trash in the bowl, it might be a good idea to check the finger screen INSIDE the fuel tank, by removing the line from the tank.
Gus, the gascolator screen is the most important because it's mesh is smaller than the jets on the carb. The finger screen in the tank, and the thimble screen on the carb are both very corse and designed to catch large particle. The fine mesh screen found in the gascolator is designed to catch the finer material that could clog a jet and shut you down at the most inopertune time. Be smart and get the correct part.

It helps when I explain myself a bit more! Sorry and you are right that most of the debris ends up in the bowl but when the fuel goes from the bowl through the screen and into the fuel line, the screen blocks the stuff from heading downstream.
If I find lots of crap in the bowl always turn the fuel line on (or have someone else pull it for a couple of seconds) and flush the line from the tank to the gascolator out.

After my post I started some doing reasoning (Finally) and realized that the fuel goes through the center hole in the screen down into the bowl and is then filtered as it flows up through the screen on its way to the carb port. Don't know why I didn't catch this the first time I looked at it? A senior moment I suppose.

I finally gave up on this glass/bale type gascolator and am ordering an Usher all Al one from Air Spruce. This one can be bolted directly to the firewall without a bracket.
Has anyone else used one of these?
Even though I found a nice copper screen the old one leaks like crazy and the bale pops out when I try to tighten it too much.
That bale makes me nervous, I can just picture it popping out in flight, that would be a disaster of major proportions. I know it can be safetied but I don't trust that either.
