Wag Aero
Wag Aero
Let me take a minute and toss a couple of 'kudos' to Wag Aero and Mike Utely in particular. I think we Aeronca owners were pretty worried when Safe Air went out of business and sold out to Wag Aero. The last thing we wanted was a bunch of orphan airplanes with no parts available. Joe and Dan at Safe Air were dependable, knowledgable and took the time to listen and talk to you. Since Wag Aero took over the Aeronca line the level of service has been just as good if not better in my humble opinion. I've worked closely with Mike Utely several times and found that if he didn't have the answer he would try to find it or at least work with you to help to solve a problem. One further note: (as others have mentioned) they have a lot more parts than are actually in their catalogue. Generally, you can take the Aeronca part number and add SAR ahead of it, email Mike and he'll be able to tell you if they have it.
Lots of times we complain about services and businesses. When they perform well we should acknowledge it also.

Anyone got general free advice about Wag Aero v. Univair.
I have used both and both have made me happy.
My next big thing will be a nose bowl. Wag has a fiberglas copy and Univair has an aluminum "original" for a lot more. Anyone with experience in either of these for my next winter project.

Wag's fiberglass nose bowls used to not fit very well, due to the shrinkage of the fiberglass when it cured. I believe the mold was redone and the problem fixed! Univair has one of the massive "Hydro Presses" that Aeronca used to press out parts. If they use this for the nose bowls, they should pretty much be just like the originals. Now if we could get them to stamp out inner door panels and throttle eustacions...

Well, just talked to Wag Aero to order some parts and found out Mike Utely is no longer with them
. Hopefully whoever they replace him with will be as knowledgable regarding the Aeronca parts. The cataloge parts are not the problem, it's once you get into the Safe Air parts that aren't listed in the cataloge is where the problem comes in. They have a lot of Aeronca parts under the Safe Air listings.

Mike Utley???
Mike Utley has left Wag??? Why in heavens name would they let him leave. As far as I'm concerned, he was the ONLY guy there who knew squat about the Aeronca. That is one HUGE loss for Wag. I would also like to know where he is going, so if anyone finds out, please let us know.

This is not good news, Mike was the go to guy on the Aeronca. I wonder how much rearranging of the deck chairs is going on at Wag Aero. They have sold one of their Cub prototypes and the Sportsman 2+2 was on barnstormers recently. I know these economic tough times are just getting started.
