More brake questions

Well, one question, actually. I have the mechanical brakes on my 7BCM, and I noticed that the starboard cable that goes down to the wheel is frayed and I need to replace it. Well, I'll replace both of them. My question is can I snake a new cable down through the housing, or am I going to have to spring for a whole new housing/cable assembly?

Terry,

Depending on the condition of the cable's houseing, sure, there is no reason not to simply replace the cable if the rest of the parts are in good shape.

This is something that an owner/operator/pilot is not allowed to do so we are assuming that you are doing this under the supervision of an A&P?

Also I personally would not replace only one cable unless you have found a reason why only one side would fray. Cables usually are replaced in pairs for this application.

Yeah, my IA is supervising, but he's out of town and I didn't have him around for advice. Next question is can I use standard aircraft cable of the right dimension, or do I need to buy the replacement cables from Wag or Aircraft Spruce? Just curious.......

Believe that this is standard aircraft spec cable, but make sure you get the right size. Sometimes people go one size smaller to make it easier to get in the cable housing, and the smaller cable just will not take the strain.

On my Chief, I found the perfect cable replacement at the "aircraft parts department" of my local Ace hardware. It was labled stainless aircraft cable. Unfortunately, I can't remember the size right now. Obviously, I wouldn't get control cable from Ace, but for brakes.... Also, I recently had to replace one of the brake cable housings. I couldn't find anyone with them available. Turns out I had a Yamaha XS650 clutch cable housing in the shop that was the exact fit. I guess I have a Yamaronca or Yamachief now.

I was able to snake new cable through the housing fairly easily. I did spray a liberal about of LPS1/WD40 down the housing to flush it out and lube it up.

The difference in Aircraft Grade and "Aircraft Grade" cables:
