Hello All.................I just got the call that my deployment has been delayed at least 6 months and might be canceled all together. As you might imagine, I'm very pleased to be able to stay home with my family a little longer.

Actually, I think I'll fly my buddies Tri-Champ for awhile.

I'm not ready to buy another plane until I'm sure that I'm not leaving again. I won't be "sure" until I retire. I plan to retire in 2011.

Hmm, I put new tires on last week. Sure lands nice these days! Closest I am getting to "retiring" anytime soon!

Retirement is great. I recommend it to everyone once they're able. I retired from teaching at the local community college 10 years ago this May although I went back and taught a couple of semesters on a part time basis (big mistake after being in charge of the program for 30 years). Now I just drive school bus part time to pay for my bad habits, flying and restoring Champs.......life is good!

Thanks for the laugh Ed...............actually, I'm learning the best way for me to keep from getting deployed is to sell an airplane. Both my Aeronca's were sold when I had alert orders in hand and both orders were cancelled soon after I sold my airplanes. The Army Reserve has only cancelled 8 alert orders over the past 2.5 years and my unit has been cancelled twice. Don't get me wrong I'm not crazy about going back but, I am tired of getting jerked around.

The new political environment has the whole Army going in different directions.

Good luck getting used to getting jerked around. There seems to be a bunch of that going around in civilian life as well.
The whole country went nuts after 9-11, admittedly with some justification, and now we seem to be doing it again. We are attempting to adjust to a world where chickens do come home to roost, borrowed money does have to be repaid, at least for most of us, and Aeroncas are once again "The Plane You Will Want to Own". Hell we have the only planes most of can afford.
Keep your head down, never volunteer, and come home safe.

Something about either buying or selling an airplane will get you a set of orders in a heart beat. I was a controller at Los Angeles center many years ago. After 6 years there, I had been trying hard to get a transfer to a terminal facility in the Los Angeles basin area. However, no way ZLA would ever be able to cut me loose though, due to critical staffing (some things never change). Myself and another controller at ZLA then decided to buy a C172 together since I wouldn't be going anywhere. I went to the facility manager to confirm that fact. "Yep..sorry, wish we could, but you're here to stay." Ok then...we pushed the buy button for the Cessna. That night, facility manager on the phone. "Hey Rog, can you be at Long Beach approach by Monday of next week?" Fortunately, I was able to back out of the Cessna, and with orders in hand, headed off to LGB the next week.
