Prewar axle struts

Does anyone know where to get prewar axle struts?

I'm also looking for Shinn wheels and brakes, in case someone has an idea where to get them.

Looking for the same but it seems that I might have to makchine the brackets and make the rest from tubes. Machine shop prices for 2 of those is around $1500, cant get them cheaper

I think Univair charges about that much for a postwar one. Next year I'm going to try and get the drawings together and get a price from Acorn Wleding (they are the only place around here that can machine/weld stuff for certified planes). I have two axles that are OK, but they have different axles/wheels, one is the taper axle and one is straight. That makes it a little tough to rig skis.

The tapered axlels are for Shinn wheels/brakes, the straight axles are for Cleveland type wheels/brakes. You can get the prints for the axle struts and any good welder can weld them as a owner produced part as long as you show them the prints and tell them to do it. Most prewar Chiefs came with Shinn wheels and brakes.

The NAA has lots of blueprints, so if you have a number please let us know. Otherwise Todd Trainor (do a google search) also has a lot of factory blueprints on his website.

Hi guys,
The drawing 3-44b looks exactly like the tapered axle I have on one side, but the other side has a straight axle. Both have Shinn 6C5 wheels that are stamped 65-CA 1941. I'm in Canada so I'm not sure if the rules are different, but my mechanic told me if I wanted to keep it certified I had to use a certified welding shop.

So my predicament is... I want both axles the same in order to facilitate the installation of skis, but that means that I need to get a new wheel to match whatever axle I choose. I have two other Shinn wheels meant for straight axles, but they didn't come off of an aeronca and one has the wider 1 1/4" brake...

In any event, I'm takling the cracking windshield this winter and won't have enough $ to deal with the undercarriage

The print numbers for the Prewar Axle strut for the 65CA- with straight axle

Landing gear axle assembly print 3-180 L/R This is the main print and it refers to the folowing parts on the landing gear strut. Get that print and you wil see the folowing numbers.

1-884 Van /sickle Wheel pant bracket
