Chief Nose Bowl

Post by seaheli »

I need the drawing 7-541, "Ring", on the Chief nose bowl at the spinner area. It is not on the drawing cd from Todd. Does anyone have the drawing or an example part or nose bowl that I could purchase.

Comparing drawing 7-541 Ring-Nose Bowl and 4-734 Assembly-Nose Bowl. There are two notches omitted on the Assembly Bowl dwg, at the 8 o'clock position and between the 6 & 5 o'clock position. The notches are on the inner flange of the ring, also there is a rectangular hole at the 6 & 5 o'clock position. Are these notches and hole needed in the ring? What do your Chief's have in the ring on the nose bowl behind the spinner? Any information and ideas from anyone is helpful.

Thanks

Most likely they're cutouts for a McDowell Starter. But I can't a drawing to back it up; just a hunch.

Thanks Nathan, looking at photos and a local Chief, most do not have the notches. Just wondering what most people on the forum with Chief's have. Also, is there interest in these rings for repairs or converting a Champ nose bowl.

I don't have the drawings handy. The C-85 and A-65 have completely different mounts for the McDowell Starter.I know there are different bowl drawings and suspect this is the reason.

For everyone who has the drawings.... I am thinking ahead a decade or two and I think they are one of the things that Chief owners are going to be needing. There are few parts on the 11 series that are unique and I don't worry about ribs, spars or tubing. But those unique things need to have drawings circulated and put on many computers so we can save them for the next generation of Chief owners. I've always been curious how Aeronca changed the stamping for the Chief nose bowl anyway.
As long as Bob Carr still keeps making those beautiful spinners, we're fine there.

Also, on the subject, it would appear that there are two weak points in the nose bowl. One is the lower corner air filter cut out, which tends to crack because it's flexing a lot and there isn't much metal there on the corners. The second point is the welds for the ring and the cooling cutouts, which I see rewelded sometimes. Other than that...

Mark,

Do the cracks start in the outer edge of the flange or the return radius (transition from bowl contour to inset for filter)?

Thanks

They seem to start at the airfilter cut out lower corner and move out to the edge of the bowl. There is a lot of metal bending and forming in a short distance there and the cowling, thanks to annual inspections, gets flexed as you put it on and off. On my Chief, it's natural to start to tighten up the cowl with the screws that you can see the easiest. That makes the lower, bottom screws the ones that take up all the flex in the system, which is closest to the air filter cut out. Another stressor.

I finally got my hands on a Chief nosebowl and I have Todd's drawing for it but I was unaware that there was a seperate drawing for the ring. Mine is to be completely refurbished and I'd like to have the ring drawing to give to the metal magician.
