Then fill with gas, replace the lid and shake the jar. If you have a miraculous increase in the water level, you got ethanol contaminated gas.

Handy little tidbit of info thanks Dennis :)
Just one question, how much would you expect the water level to rise?

Don't think we have much ethanol up here yet but I will now check from time to time.
We were in Wis once & filled wifeys Monty with that stuff from a greeen service station, thought I was gonna have to push it home

EAA has or did have a handy little tester that was marked off in percentages. Looked like the fuel tester we've used for years when we drained our tanks on a preflight. You fill the tester with a small amount of water (I keep a jug in my hangar) to a predetermined line, shake and let it settle and watch for a increase. Mostly I've found the "up to 10% ethanol" is usually around 5 % give or take a little.

I live in Washington state, and by accident I found that I can get ethanol free fuel from my farm fuel supplier. Last summer ethanol-free fuel was .10 cheaper than ethanol fuel, so he would supply some of his cardlock stations with ethanol fuel to meet state law. Now state law requires all ethanol fuel, but he told me he can still get ethanol free fuel, but it is more expensive. The truck driver knew more than the salesman, about the type of fuel he delivered. I still check the fuel for alcohol contamination.
I've been using 100ll since last fall, because it has been only 3.55-3.88; using a cardlock system at the Richland airport. My 65CA seems to run better with 100ll than with mogas. I'm sure that my float was set for 100ll, when it was overhauled. My other planes don't seem to have the problems.

Senior,

If the gas has 10% ethanol and you put about 1 part of water and 9 parts of gas in the jar, the mixture of water and ethanol should be about double.

I was at a ag trade show{ I grow corn JC-- and Bush's veto was over ridden on farm subsides]., where I spoke with a fuel supplier in Eastern WA. He said that he still is able to get ethanol free fuel. He keeps it for the boater's and other vehicles that have sued in the state of washington over damage to their engines from ethanol blended fuels.
So Skyking you might want to look up the boat people in your area, and see if they are selling ethanol free fuel.
Other wise bring your p.u. and a tank; and come over get some fuel. My latest card lock bill for 100ll was 3.55. and auto fuel is 2.82

If you have a marina in your area, check if they can get it. Here in New York all car gas now has to contain at least 10% ethanol, so there are no gas stations where you can get it, but the distributors can legally provide it to places that do not sell fuel for use in automobiles, which includes airports and marinas.

The problem has been that the distributor used to be willing to deliver 500 gallons at a time, but now will not deliver less than 2,000 gallons a trip. Fortunately the local grass strip has a 1,000 gallon tank, our seaplane base has a 500 gallon tank and there are at least 5 marinas in the area that will take various amounts, so at the moment we are not having a problem getting it.

You might want to check out the local fuel distribution companies and see if they are delivering non-ethanol fuel to someone in your area.
