Eddie,
With the way your aircraft is tanked I see a couple of ways to proceed. The easiest, would be to placard one tank INOP and cap all openings. Plumb the fuel system per the 7DC specifications and call it a day.
If you want to use both wing tanks and the fuselage tank it looks like it would require a field approval. The Aero Fabricators STC (SA19SO) doesn,t include the 7DC. The same for the McKenzie STC (SA4-97)which is only for installing 1 wing tank. Only the Stoddard Aero Service STC (SA89AL) includes the 7DC, that would be the information I would try to locate.
Have your mechanic fill out the Form 337 and get the approval BEFORE starting the plumbing job. It will save you alot of headaches.
To answer some of your other questions,
If the tank has fwd and aft bungs I would use the aft, it will allow the tanks to drain while on the ground.
Each tank should have an independent shut-off valve, this system uses the aux tanks to refill the main (Fuselage) tank. My proceedure is to burn the main tank to 1/2 and open ONE wing tank, fly for one hour and open the remaining wing tank. After landing close both wing tank valves. If you forget to close the valves when you fuel, you will overflow the main tank. Anyone who has wing tanks has done it,if they say they haven,t dont let them date your sister.
The original valve and plumbing will not be altered.
Sorry about being so long winded. Paul

Nope....don't have one. Just two younger brothers. Sorry about goofing up the thread  as it has nothing to do with Champs (couldn't resist, though) I promise to be good from now on  .

You do not have to be good all the time. Entertaining is nice at times! A good laugh helps everyone, so enjoy!

Wing Again

Post by MikeB »

OK, Back to wing tanks before I blow all my extra funds and buy the Chief. On the WAG-AERO STC set up (5 gallon) is it necessary to recover over the wing tanks, once they're installed or do they actually have a metal plate that takes the place of the fabric once the tanks are installed. Just looking at the picture in the WAG-AERO catalog (wish book) makes me wonder. I've seen some setups where there is no fabric over the tanks and the tanks just go from rib to rib (Stinson, I think??).

Mike,

The ones I have seen have fabric over the top, and no metal cover. Have never seen a Aeronca wing tank with a metal cover. It sure would be nice to have for access after the fact but no one has done this that I know of.

Mike,

Per Wag STC: "Finish the wings by recovering the top of the wing area with material as per original and replace the pinkedge tapes and finish with dope as per CAM 18."

The tank fills the first bay between the wires. Would you like a copy of the STC?

The Champion 7FC/EC allows a metal cover over the wing tanks. There are a few small differences, mostly to provide for fastening the cover on.

I put fabric over mine, though.

Thanks for the fuel tank info guys. I was trying to avoid recovering over the fuel tanks due to the 7600 process on the wings. But if I get to the point of installing fuel tanks, I think I'll probably recover the wings anyway due to the fact I've never had them uncovered and the log book entry by one of the former owners is pretty sketchy. Right now I'm in the process of looking at a Super Chief (ugh) to finish. At least this is not a complete basket case. Retirement is great!!!
