Continental C85-12 needed

Post by RRHaldeman »

I'm looking for a Continental C85-12 to upgrade my 1946 7AC Champ to add a starter and battery using the Lasher STC.

The 85-12's seem to be more 'scarce than hen's teeth'. I had one lined up in Dallas, Texas a couple years ago and stopped to look at the logs when heading south down I35. Seemed he wanted around $6500 and it was last overhauled in 1956, plus the logs were a little shady so I never even bothered to look at the engine which was somewhere else. I called about a couple of others in the surounding area that were supposed to be available but were gone by the time I called. Another sounded good, overhaul and pricewise but had no certified paperwork (came out of an experimental) so after looking around, I finally decided to go with a 0200 and the Buzz Wagner STC for my L16 project which isn't without it's problems either considering the annual spar inspection (100 horse) and installation requirements. I expect I'll have somewhere between $8-9,000 in the engine before I'm done but at least I'll know what I have and I also have the logs back to day one.

I've since seen them on Barnstormers on occasion but I'd be cautious about the paperwork and overhauls.

Why not call Don Sword, at Don's Dream Machines, Griffin Georgia. He sometimes has used engines, and sells rebuilt C-85's with the 0200 crank STC.
