Orlan's post isn't quite the whole story. The UK has a "National Private Pilot License" standard which allows medical self certification co-signed by a doctor who has "access to your medical records." He doesn't need to test or examine you, just co-sign. The medical standard required for solo flight, or flight with another pilot, is the same as for a regular drivers license. If you are fit enough for a professional drivers license (Bus, truck etc.) this NPPL has similar privileges, with some restrictions,(max. 3 passengers, flight within the UK,) as a regular Private Pilot License.

Re: Aeronca's and LSA weight
Just to add a little info, when I lived in Egypt, I tried to get my pilot certificate recognized without success. I was told I could PIC a "N" registered plane but not fly as PIC in a local registered plane. Over a 6 month period, I talked with a lot of "important" officials, took exams, took a physical (have you ever committed suicide?), paid bribes but never got my Egyptian certificate.
Also, some countries make it difficult for an aircraft owner to take his plane "out of country".

Dennis,
Know what you mean. I have licenses from several countries and done the JAR medical (1.5 days long) and we do not realize how good we have it here much of the time.
