I just got my Sky-Tec kit this week for my Champ. Pulled the 65 and installing a C90. Going on floats so I was concerned about weight (and $$$ ), but I'm happy with it.
At least the motor's out and I can work it on the bench.

I put a Sky-Tec on my 85 Champ, ...love it !
Trimed off about 5 lbs., the push button's nice and
sold the old one on ebay.

What's the length difference between the Sky-tec and the regular starter? I really want to use my standard (short) mount on my L16 project (w/0200). Using the standard mounts (like the 65/85 horse) and adapters, it seems I lack about 1/2" of squeezing the starter in realizing I'll probably have to pull the engine to get the starter out.

My original starter measures 7 1/4" from the mounting face to the end of the armature cover. The Sky-Tec measures 6". I'm using the "short mount", and will have to loosen the motor when I need to service the starter.
I got that advice from a very reliable source!

You save something like 2-3 inches in length with the B&C or Skytec starter. Then you also save about 5-7 pounds over the original.
One other benefit is that they spin like the dickens, as they are a geared starter. Someone told me that they are using a geared starter off of a Japanese car, adapted for A/C use.
If you do a web search for Skytec or B&C you will find their sites and they have sizes and weights listed there.

So basically there's about 1 1/4 inch difference between the 'standard' and the sky-tec which should be enough, even though tight. I covered the 'dish pan' someone had cut into the firewall at some time previously as it was pretty crude and made out of aluminum anyway which I didn't think was a great idea with the fuel tank right behind the firewall. I thought there might have been a difference in tube thickness between the short and long mount but the 'reliable source' says the thickness is the same.
I'm still 'twittling my thumbs
