small fabric repair

Post by flyingfool »

I had to remove my rear windows in my Chief. Anyhow the metal strip that holds the window in place was stuck down with calk when the last person installed the windows. Worked great as they didn't leak.

But...

When I was pealing these off I had to use a putty knife to slit the calk to lift off the metal strip. Although I was careful, I did somehow manage to get a bit under the fabric which causes a small tear. Current fabric is stits with polytone, Insignia white.

my question: Must I buy: 1 qt. of poly tack, 1 qt of poly brush and 1 qt of polytone? This is like $80 worth of stuff + Shipping. Or can I buy some smaller quantity that I could buy or "borrow" from someone else?

I realize that I should have some on hand for other repairs. But I hate to spend probably $100 by the time I get done paying hazardous shipping costs and then have it expire or go bad sitting on the shelf just to have to be able to do a silver dollar patch here and there.

I'm also wondering about Stewarts. At some point in the future I will cover the plane and I'm leaning towards Stewarts. I understand that Stewarts is approved for repairs over ANY other covering system including stits (polyfiber).

Any hints?

See if anyone on the list has a small amount of the needed chemicals and put a small patch on it. Fly it for now with a piece of tape on it if needed.

I know of a certain Chief that had its wing tip fabric damaged at Middletown in 2006. To get it home he patched it up with matching tape. Funny thing... when it flew in for the fly-in held in 2008 the tape was STILL on the wing! He must have put it back on after patching the fabric! :) (in other words, its still flying over 2 years later with NO repair!)

Hope this helps...

Look in the ACSpruce catalog for a Practice Kit. $58 bucks.

"You get a practice frame, fabric, tapes, needles, rib lacing cord, thermometer, instructions, & all coatings you need to work through the Poly-Spray stage. "

Where are you? I can supply the quantities you need for a small repair if you are near San Antonio, Texas.

FF,

The above post brings up a good point. If you would please, put some sort of location on your profile so that people have an idea how far they are away from you if needed.

Thx,

I added and updated my profile.

I am located just outside Madison, WI.

I think I may have a local lead on some poly tack and some fabric. I'll have to figure out something for the insignia white.

I do know that Rustoleum semi-gloss white is a perfect match for metal parts.
