Hi folks,
On my '46 chief on the RH side, it appears like the inside of the wheel half or possibly the brake disc itself is worn because 2 of the 4 brake clips will not stay in place and fall right out as son as I move the plane. The remaining two clips seem to be holding with adequate tension. I am quite happy with the way the brakes work and am not considering a conversion or anything. I assume the wheel is not available new but does anyone know of any good used wheels around? Or maybe someone that could maybe build up some metal and repair mine? Thanks! Pat

Pat,
If the clips are not staying in the wheels, DO NOT fly the airplane.
This is how several airplanes that I know of have had accidents, either ground loops or even so bad as to flip over on their back when one wheel siezes. What happens is that the brake disk gets cocked in the wheel and stops the wheel from turning.
One thing that a lot of people are doing is to either RTV or use electrical tape to hold the clips in, but please make sure that they are held in firmly before flying.
I have some extra Goodyear stuff, wheels included. If it comes to getting a different wheel, pls let me know. Please do not take a chance with the airplane unless you are sure the disk and clips will stay in place.

Agree with Joe. Don't fly it until you get the problem whipped. I'm assuming you have the style with the little projection on the inner wheel to keep the clip in place. It isn't much but enough to hold the clip usually. I use RTV (FAA approved, of course) to hold the clip once everything is in place.

Does anybody have photo sequence and good pictures of the Goodyear brake assembly & process?
I have seen blow up pictures and parts drawings. But not actually pictures and how this RTV of the clips works etc. I also understand there are two different types of clips. I'd like to see pictures of them and how each is best installed. My annual is coming up and I'd like to go through the brakes good.
Also I have no problems with my oleo's. Is there a way to look at these and reinstall them without getting new packing etc. Or once apart do you have to do a total new parts build up?

Use the parts blow-up for assembly sequence.

Those Goodyear Brake Clips are problematic at best. I had a C310 with Goodyear brakes and I swear I showered brake clips all over Virginia 'til I upgraded to Clevelands.
My Champ has the Goodyear wheels and someone (before me) came up with a very clever way to safety wire the clips in place.
If I can figure out how to upload pictures I'll try to post a picture or two.

Well I got bold and JB welded my clips in place. Was a little tricky to get the brake disk in place behind all 4 clips but not too bad with 3 smaller screwdrivers. So far with a lot of taxiing around to test it and one flight the brake works great and staying firmly in place. Thanks for all the suggestions! Pat

Pat,
The only problem with JB Weld is that you have to remove the clips every annual to inspect the wheel and clean the bearings. Thats why we usually use Silicone.
Anyways make sure they are secure and check them every takeoff and landing.

Guys, I am looking for a set of Goodyear wheels and brakes for my Champ. I will probably modify them to take the clips like the later wheels did(with retaining buttons). Only way I feel good about not losing a clip. Besides them being pricey. Get away from the cracking wheels. Anyone who wants to sell a set, let me know. Thanks, David J.

I might have a complete set available. Am in the final stages of doing a "Goodyear to late model Cleveland" swap and will have the Sedan stuff that I do not need.
What are you going to be using it on? Please tell me you are keeping the Champ!?

Joe, have been thinking of going back to my Champ project instead of the Citabria. Cheaper and Faster to get flying. I will never go completely away from Champs......just ain't happening. Give a holler if you are interested in parting with them. Thanks, David J.

I have some mechanical disk Goodyear stuff. Some cable and some hyd versions.

Joe, I am looking for the L6MBD Goodyears Mechanical Brakes like came on the Chief. I have made a deal for a set in Griffin(close to Tater), but there are a few things missing. I will have to buy new clips, and will convert to the buttons. The discs are not in great shape, and the return springs are missing. They are from Steve that you listed the parts for sale for. I have not seen them yet, he still needs them to roll the fuselage around till it sells. Any spare parts you have I am interested in. Let me know if you are willing to part with anything that may go below the Mason-Dixon line! Thanks, David J.

The clips with the buttons are the only way to go IMHO as long as you can find them.
I just did a tire change on the Sedan and found all 8 of my clips still being held very securely with the buttons. One clip was broken but thats life, the biggest part was still being held in and more important held the disk.
Believe that the Luscombe people here in Mesa or Tempe have new disks for the Goodyears. Might look and see what they want. I have some used ones but most are in rough shape. If we could find someone to hard chrome them that would be nice.
