rudder cables

Post by PB Schafer »

Does anyone have some good pictures of the rudder cable connections to the pedals? the drawings are not that detailed. Specifically, the adjusting plates. My basket case came with one on the back of each front and rear pedal. I see them only on the rear pedals. Is this an optional thing? Is their an economical source for the floorboard clamps? I know what could be used, but would like to go with correct if possible. Thanks.

This is the way they were on my Champ, so I don't know if they are correct. Maybe some better expert will say I'm wrong.

There are no adjustment plates on the front pedals, only on the rears. There are two plates on each rear pedal, with the cable ends sandwiched inbetween. The single hole in the plate is forward and the adjustment holes to the rear. I have clevis bolts and AN-320 nuts (which are shear nuts only finger tight) on all the cable ends with a shackle on the interconnect cable inbetween the front and rear pedals and no shackle on the cable to the rudder, except near the rudder end.

When you assemble the rear pedals, put the clevis bolts in from the inboard side with the nuts on the outboard side, so you don't rip up your shoes on the nuts and cotter pins.

I have a good picture but I'm having problems down loading it to Photobucket so I can post it. If you want I can e-mail you the photo, Jim

Think this is what you're looking for. Like Jim said, put the nuts and cotter pins on the outboard side. Not sure where the adjustment bolt should be. I think I just used the same one as my Champ. Hope this helps..

You guys are fantastic! That is exactly the info and pictures I needed. This project is like putting together a big swing set without the instructions. Thanks to all. :D

Mike would you happen have the part number for the right and left rudder cables that run from the rear rudder pedals to the rudder horn on the 7 AC Champ? Univair has like 6 different part numbers. While doing the annual we found the right rudder cable has about three tiny little strands that have worn in-two right where it exists fuselage fabric.
thanks in advance

Joey,
The part number in my L16 manual is 1-2364 for the cable assembly. I can't imagine why they (Univair) would have different cable lengths. Just checked my 7AC manual and it's the same part number as expected. Looks like it should be 168 11/16 inches long.

Just checked and see that Univair does list the cable at $84.33 for regular or $98.93 stainless.
They can also be 'made up' if you can find someone with the correct tools. Also, might check Wag Aero and see if they list the cable assembly.

Hope this helps.

Hi Joey,
I edited the post while you read it. Anyway, I'll be at Oshkosh. Don't know that I ever missed since the late 60's. There are some 'Aeronca folks' up here that are planning to fly to Middletown in June and wanted to know if I was interested but haven't made a committment yet (seems like I have too many committments :? 0.
