Oshkosh

Post by mtw »

Finally if all holds I will make the pilgrimage to Oshkosh! Will be driving instead of flying but that's okay. My question is are all the Aeroncas parked in the same general area or are they just scattered throughout? Also, how many of you are planning on flying in?

Thanks,

Well, I am little closer. I have been wanting to go for years and this is my 25th anniversary present from my super wife!

Todd,
Mostly the Aeroncas are scattered throughout the tie down and camping area. Some like Bill Pancake and Ray Johnson are in the 'previous award winner' area. Be sure and stop in the type tent and say "hello" to Jody, Jim Thompson, etc. I've been known to hang around too and drink their free water. Depending on weather I plan on flying in again. It's only a couple hundred miles from me on the other side of the state. I don't think I've ever missed Oshkosh.
Where else can you OD on airplanes??

Todd,

God willing and the creek don't rise, I will be there again camping in the north 40. I have been going since 1983. That is where I get re-energized and see old friends I have not seen since last year. This year I am leaving on the 20th. I like to get there early.

Oshkosh gets in your blood. This will be the 35th consecutive Oshkosh I've attended... most of the time I've driven and stayed in Camp Scholler but I've spent my fair share of time camped under a wing.

Just a reminder Todd, if you're planning on camping in Camp Scholler someone in your party needs to be an EAA member. Motels are booked up years in advance and their prices are terrible! Rooms are generally available at the college but you should make a reservation.

Have a great Oshkosh!

I'm trying to remember when the first Oshkosh was but I believe it was 1969 or 1970. I had a 1965 Ford Econoline pickup (that's how I'm gauging the time frame) and we parked along the blacktop road that's where you now cross from the parking lot into the convention grounds. Now it's a 15 minute walk in from the parking lot depending on the time you get there.

Mike, I sure hated to see those folks go who lived alone the blacktop road. They had good food at a reasonable price. Plus I like the fly market next to the north 40 parking.

I always liked the big balloon that said "BEER". I never stopped but it probably looked good to some folks after trudging around all day. Generally, I take the bus around and head to Friar Tucks for a good meal and 'refreshment' at the end of the day. Need to get there early, though. I think my favorite activity is sitting by the runway and watching the planes take off and land.

I'm planning to attend EAA-Oshkosh this year like every year. Fortunately I "only" live 90 miles away. I have only missed 3 Oshkosh's since 1980. Two of them when I was working as a line boy working off my flight instruction and one year when I had to work to help pay for college. Have not missed a single one since 1987.

My camping party is able to go up and rope off (and pay) for our camping site in Camp Scholler on July 18. So I'll be able to send off a message as to my camp location to you all. In general we camp just west of the antique classic aircraft parking area just across Knapp street and south of Paul's park.

I would recommend camping at the site. It gives you a place to dump all the stuff you buy or literature you collect during the day, rather than having to lug it around all day. Also you can go back and take a nap and rest your weary feet etc. Everyone has their own opinion on what is best.

My kids & I all can't wait for the fly in.
