- * What type Aeronca logos were used in 1940?
* Was there a "Chief" decal anywhere?
* Was the NC Number on the tail 2" lettering?

Pre-War Registration and Decals
I'd like to eventually get the Chief back to my original look.

Re: Pre-War Registration and Decals
That's timely! Just yesterday, I ordered a batch of Aeronca tail logos for myself and a friend who is restoring a C3 and I may have a few spare.
I actually have a couple of unused original Aeronca waterslide transfers from the late 30s although they are somewhat cracked now. 20 years ago when I bought my plane, it sported the same ones on the vertical stabilizer. The logo is a very pretty 12" wide flaming wing design in red, yellow and blue with "AERONCA" in large black yellow bordered letters with "AERONAUTICAL CORP. OF AMERICA, CIN'TI O." printed underneath.
On pre-war Chiefs, the logo was usually a bit more than half way up on the vertical stabilizer with the registration behind it on the rudder. The ones I'm having made should be a copy of these but in s/a vinyl, printed with u/v resistant ink and laminated.
The book "Aeronca-A Photo History" by Bob Hollenbough and John Houser contains many early photos showing the various logos used, most of which were variations of the wing design. It's well worth having for anyone owning an old Aeronca.

Yes, that's almost what they look like. Those have oddly cut off corners for some reason which the originals don't.
The original water slides are slightly larger too, 12" x 5". The decals I've ordered should be a direct copy.

Did you say you had extras?Clive wrote:Yes, that's almost what they look like. Those have oddly cut off corners for some reason which the originals don't.

If not, I'll order the decals from aero-stuff.com

I will have a few spares but they won't be ready for a couple of days or so.Dan1940Chief wrote: Did you say you had extras?

I thought I might sell the extra ones for around $10 ea to help with my costs but until I've seen and checked them, I can't say for sure.
Re: Pre-War Registration and Decals
Well, I've received my Aeronca decals and they are beautiful, I think.
They are an exact copy in color and size of the original pre-war 'Flaming Wing' transfer (12'X5"), printed from original artwork rather than from a scan (which doesn't produce sharp outlines). The colors are red, blue and yellow with black and white lettering and they are made with exterior grade s/a vinyl, clear laminated and printed with u/v resistant ink.
A few went as soon as I took them to the airport (two C3s being restored) but I have a couple of sets spare which I would sell as I mentioned above. If there's any further demand, I could get some more printed but I think a more realistic price for those would be say $15 ea plus actual postage.
BTW, since it seems I can't get my signature to work, here's a photo of my '38 65C, owned for 20 years and still going strong. The remains of the original waterslide logo can be seen on the tail.

What are you trying to do with your signature? If you are having trouble modifying it and want me to do it, pls PM or email me your password and what you want in the signature.Clive wrote:BTW, since it seems I can't get my signature to work, here's a photo of my '38 65C, owned for 20 years and still going strong. PS beautiful airplane! Hope you have a grass strip!
Re: Pre-War Registration and Decals
Thanks Joe, PM sent.
Yes, for sure. It's a 1500' private grass strip and the Chief shares a hangar with the owner's 85hp Champ. Got a Stinson 108 and a Murphy Rebel on amphibs there too.

Dan, I'll send a pic of the decal to your contact email. I haven't actually had a chance to install mine on the airplane yet.Dan1940Chief wrote: Have a better pic of the logo decal?

Clive,
Do you still have any of these decals? Also, who did you use to make your decals? I want to get some old style Sensenich Lilitz SB decals made. I found a place online but, they print on white vinyl and the machine will leave a small white line around the edge of the decal.
