Trying to get more brake still. Measured ID of my drum on my 46 AC and it is only worn .003 after all these years, I have the spec measurement a friend got from manufacturer few years ago. Linings still over 3/8" thick, ordered new ones from Univair and they are same thickness. Have to rotate cam about 30-45 degrees til shoes start to make contact with drum and then with full brake can still spin wheel by hand with some effort. Scuffed linings and drum. Cam plate looks grooved. Is that part A7210 available anywhere, is it steel, can it be built up without damaging the shoe metal, is it removable without damaging the shoe metal? Is the cam assembly A7300 available anywhere as it is probably worn also. Thank you.

I have a similar problem. A friend very familar with the maintenance of Aeroncas suggested that the brake shoes be removed and then reinstalled with a thin shim sandwiched between the shoe and shoe holder to close the gap between the shoe face and the drum. According to my friend, this method has been successfuly used in the past.

Re: Cam wear plate on Cleveland brakes
Thanks, I have considered that but still wonder about possiblity of getting new or having made cam wear plates and how to get the old ones out. Are they just tapped out or do I have to heat the shoe first. Thanks again.

Doc,
I have not seen brake parts like this available new in years. You might find some NOS sitting around but thats questionable.
One last thing I might mention. If I were in your shoes I would find one extra of both of these parts and send them to Don Jones. He has a lot of people over there in Guam who are able to reproduce almost anything. Get him to make you some extras that are built up in this wear area, but with only the pilot hole in the piece. This way when you get them you have to drill them to the blueprint or to fit and that way you can legally say you made the part for your airplane.

Re: Cam wear plate on Cleveland brakes
Appreciate the feedback. Was hoping to be able to pop out the little wear block and have a local machine shop make me a little thicker one. Will look into your advice in the fall!

Re: Cam wear plate on Cleveland brakes
Doc,
If I am understanding your problem correctly
, I had the same a few years ago. With the brake cable disconnected and the airplane wheel off the ground, if you rotate the cam in the opposite direction as to normal braking does this lock up the wheel or can you still turn it by hand?
I simply switched the cams (Left one on the right side and right one on the left). This should work unless someone already did this a few thousand hours ago then both side of the cams would be worned.

Re: Cam wear plate on Cleveland brakes
Someone must have switched them at some point, I did swap them and still can rotate wheel. My plane has over 6700 hrs on the airframe, can't tell from searching the logs if brakes ever touched.. Thanks.

Re: Cam wear plate on Cleveland brakes
Cleveland Brakes:
Cleveland obsoleted these brakes by raising prices 100% per year for about 10 years running. There is LOTS of old stock that remains available for these brakes- but it is generally expensive.
Classic Aero at 480-650-0883 has many used serviceable parts like cams, linings, back plates, shoes, return springs, retainer springs and wheel halves. The steel shoe plates are swaged into the aluminum, and not removable or replaceable without damaging the shoe. The problems with these swaged bearing plates is the reason these brakes were discontinued by Cleveland / VanSickle.
Classic Aero can provide what you need at reasonable pricing for the used and some of the other materials. Classic Aero also has good stock on the Goodyear mechanical disk brake systems, and the Firestone - Shinn mechanical brake systems.
Call at 480-650-0883 for details or rigging info.
