Wheel Spats

Am looking for a set of wheel spats for a Champ.

Not wheel pants- But they are a fender type wheel covering
that fits over the top of the wheel.

Would be interested in obtaining a set, or even finding a pattern
for making a set.

I have one side that could be used as a pattern. I don't know if it is for a Champ or a Cub. I bought it to use as a pattern to build a set but I have changed my mind. If you are interested, I can send you some pictures. I would sell it for what I have in it. I will have to look that up to find out what I paid.

At the Antique Aircraft Ass'n fly-in, I found a pair of fenders that might work on my 7AC Champ. Tried to find a drawing without success. Joe, if you get this, I'd like photos of the fender attachment also.

I have fenders installed on my Champ 3129E. They are listed on the A-759 type certificate as item 208, wheel fenders, Consolidair Model 17 (Consolidair dwg. 0036). I obtained a pair from Carl White a couple years ago. If you do a Google search for Consolidair Metal, they are listed in Memphis. I have no idea if it is the same company or if they still have drawings. If you follow the EAA photo link http://www.eaa.org/apps/galleries/gallery.aspx?ID=339

Thanks for your prompt response. I am familiar with your aircraft. I took 8-10 photos of it and the fenders at Middletown. When I found a set of used fenders at the Antique Aircraft Association fly-in at Blakesburg, Iowa this weekend, I could not resist. The fenders themselves are in good shape but I'm now looking for the drawing. Your lead was excellent. I wrote a letter to Consolidair in Memphis, hoping it may be the correct company and the fender is still available. On the flip side, I talked to Buck Hilbert today and his recollection is that while he was teaching, making a fender was a class project. He recalls that the fenders were never intended to be installed on an aircraft but they would disappear and later appear on aircraft. I don't think he is aware of the Consolidair drawing and I'll let him know. If I find any new information, I'll post it here. Some Champ guys kid me and call the "Speed brakes."

The Consolidair fenders were used on more than Aeroncas. There are other versions using different drawing numbers for installations on Piper J3 T.C. A-691 and Taylorcraft BC12 T.C. A-696 for examples. I'm sure there are others. I suspect the actual fenders were all the same and the different models and drawings were for the differences in the attachments to different landing gear tubing sizes and configurations between the different aircraft manufacturers. jrh
