Aileron Hing Bearings for an 11CC.

Paul, are the Champ and Chief hinge bearings the same? Do you have the dwg# to reference the part#?

The Champ and Chief use the same bearings. These have about a 7/16 inner race and a 1/4 outer. The extended inner race is needed to clamp to the aileron hinge. The hinge bolts should be tight to make the bearing turn. If left loose the aileron hinge point will wear. I find many bolts loose.
The Citabria uses a different bearing. It's OD is different and the inner race is the same width as the outer. They require the special shim washers for installation. You could install the Citabria units on a Champ if the bearings become a big problem.
I picked up a small supply of Champ bearings years back and only change them if I'm not able to free them up. The biggest problem is not keeping the aileron attach bolts tight and the bearing seizes in one position.
I would guess the bearing is on the center and outboard hinge bracket drawing. Todd should have a copy of it. The bellcrank uses a different bearing and are easy to get.

One thing to remember is that the Chief and Champ are exactly the same airplane except for the fuselage and some of the control system gear.

Sticks versus control wheels, fuselage is different once about 3-4 foot forwards of the tail and thats about it. Almost everything else is exactly the same with few exceptions.

I talked directly with RBC bearing today, Aerospace and Industrial divisions. The Nice bearings are supplied under the Industrial division. The 402-2V are still in production; new part# 4022VBF.

RBC sells only to distributers, like most manufacturers. I have contacted a local distributer for price quote of the bearings. Is there a need for this specific bearing?

Looking at dwg# 2-689, the original bearing callout is AN 201 (size K4A); the outer race dia. is .750", with the wider width inner race.

The alternate bearing; "Nice Bearing" outer race dia. .687", and the width of the outer and inner race are the same.

What outer race OD do you need, or is most common on the 7AC and 11AC?

The outer diameter is .687 and the inner race needs to be the same width as the as the steel fitting on the aileron. This is for the center and outboard only on the 7/11 series. The 402-2v is the correct size OD but the inner race is too narrow.
I don't need any bearings, I have a good supply of the correct ones. Generally the bearings can be cleaned and lubed. They don't wear much at all.
The Citabria uses the same .750 OD bearing at all locations.

OK, here's a true solution to this issue.

Aircraft Spruce sells the bearing we need labeled as a Stinson Part. If you have a Spruce catalogue, you may be able to see a picture of the bearing on the "Stinson parts" page. It is not pictured on-line. It is Aircraft Spruce part number 05-08400 and costs $24.50 at the time of this posting. It is an exact replacement for the bearing in the aileron (not bellcrank) hinge fittings in the older 7 and 11 series aircraft. It has the wide inner race we need, and in every other way matches the worn out bearings that came out of my aileron hinges.

The "Stinson" bearing was manufactured by the Schatz bearing corporation in Poughkeepsie, NY. Their part number may be CS3906, but that number doesn't show up in any of their on-line catalogues.

I've got two of 'em here and two more on order.

The first two pressed in just fine. They are an exact match to the originals. Except they are not worn out.
