Saying Hello
Saying Hello
I've been a lurker on the list for quite some time. Great list! Lots of very helpful information.
I've been wanting a Chief for a while, and I took the plunge to join the list and buy a Chief about the same time recently. Found N86249 up in Denver and flew up a couple of weeks ago to check her out. Very lovely, in great shape. So I bought her and just got her ferried to her new home (KILE) yesterday.
So I thought I'd introduce myself and show her off at the same time.
Looking forward to lots of nice, lazy flights with her. A number of nice grass strips in the area.
Here's a couple of pics.

Re: Saying Hello
Home RUN! Nice airplane! Where are you? East coast? JC ( what number metal prop is on it? and is it a 65 hp?)
Re: Saying Hello
I'm in central Texas. Prop is a 1B90 CM7342. She has an A-75 (modified from the original A-65). But I'm not sure this particular prop lets her take advantage of the increased horsepower. I've only flown her on the checkout flight before buying her (she was only ferried down this last Wednesday/Thursday and the weather since has been bad), but I'm not sure I can get the full 2600 rpm that the A-75 is supposed to supply out of her. I'm not worried about that, since she performed just fine at Denver's 5000ft altitude, and so should do fine at my < 1000ft.
But, let me ask whether even if the prop won't allow the full 2600 at takeoff full throttle, can I still cruise her at 2300 instead of the 2150 that's normal for the A-65? She'll make 2300, but that's about it, I think. I'll know more when I can actually fly her down here. My understanding is that the modifications (rods, etc) that turned the engine into an A-75 were to allow for higher rpm. So even if the prop limits full to 2300, can I also cruise at that safely?

Re: Saying Hello
Check with Paul but it seems to be a McCauley and the length and twist would be a pretty good choice for climb.....I think,..... but don't take my word for it! JP

Yes you will be just fine at 2300. I have the same engine but my prop is 7042

Thanks John,
That what I was thinking, and I'm sure it won't make a huge difference, but if I'm ever in a big hurry, it's good to know I can run her at that rpm. Of course, if I'm ever in a big hurry, I probably should be driving! :-}
