What propeller turns your crank?

Mike,
I agree with you on the McCauley props. I have two of them on my Aeronca,s. The pitch and length you chose should be ideal for the 85 Continental.
Having never used the Sensenich on the small Continental,s. I am interested in the Model and Specifications of the Sensenich prop you used. I have a chance to purchase one for a 65 Continental and don,t want to buy it if the performance is sub-standard.

Well I broke down and bought a brand new McCauley last week. It's a beauty but something is a little different... it has extra holes in it!!! Outside the bolt pattern are to extra holes in line with the blades, and then there are 2 holes on the flat sides of the hub. I understand that they're there for adding weight to balance, but I've never seen them in a 1B90 before. Anybody else has a newer production Mc.?

I,ve seen two threaded holes on the flat sides for adding the balance weights, as you discribed. They were 10/32 thread pitch. The holes inline with the blades were appx. 3/8 diameter outside the bolt pattern, and used for drive pins on the prop extension.

Here's what I don't understand, why change a 40 year old design? Second off, it seems like quality control should prevent having to add weight at the factory. Personally I don't like it, I think it looks unproffessional and unclean having extra holes drilled in the prop. Further more, the 3/8 inch balance holes on in the FACE of the hub and OUTSIDE the spinner. I'm concerned about those holes filling with trash and garbage and throwing the balace off.

Oh well, it's not like I can make them change the design, just venting I guess.

Nathan: Calm down, you're gonna blow a gasket.

I agree, there is not GOOD reason for these holes in there. I't posible to buy threaded rod in plastic, if you wish to plug them. It takes a lot of weight at the hub area to really make any difference in balance.

Yeah it's a 1b90 cm7146. Ron you bring up a good point, I could just get some plain plastic rod to shove down the hole. As long as the fit is snug, it shouldn't come out. Plus the 3/8's holes aren't threaded and I could paint it black.

I don't think they're for a spacer, the holes are on the front of the hub. I'll get some pics tomorrow.

Nathan: I see what you mean. It's strange. If it was for span balance, you would think they would at least put it in the back. Maybe because the front face is under less stress. What's the two screws for, chord balancing?

Why put the holes on the front where they will fill with crap? As for the screws, I assume it's for static ballance in that plane, there's a set of tapped holes on the other side aswell, but nothing in them. You cant really see it in the pic, but I bet there's 1/16 or better of paint on the thing!

I called the shop about possibly shipping it back and finding an old style. McCaulley (which is now Cessna) wants 20% back for restocking. Thats $443 ($2205.86 .......18% off list plus shipping (overnight though!)) OUCH!

could the holes have been originally to support a bracket for a "skull cap" spinner ?. what does mc caulley say they are for ? bernie

The scull cap bracket catches 2 of the bolts, and then the cap rides just bairly outside the bolt pattern. Talking with the propshop, they agree the are holes are for adding weight to pick up a blade.
