Seaplane Door
Seaplane Door
After giving up finding the 1961 STC for the Seaplane Door Modification (I understand that the holder of that STS is no longer with us), I had a 337 Written based on the original design and limitations and got an FAA field approval. I have sent the information to one of the participants on the Forum and who is a member of the Aeronca.Com group, where it will be posted under the 337 section.
In the meantime if anyone wants a copy of this, please just E-mail me and I will be happy to send you the PDF file.
Regards, Robert

Re: Seaplane Door
Hello everyone,
I am thinking of doing this STC since the door on our Champ needs work anyways. Two reasons I would like to do this are
that I want to be able to fly with the door open sometimes, and the other is that I may be able to start the engine from behind the prop like is common with a J3 (let me know if I can't for some reason)
Is this picture of this door STC

If it is the Seaplane door, does this one have lift struts instead of a latch to hold it up against the wing?
David

Re: Seaplane Door
Hi,
The 337 / Field Approval that I used and is posted, looks like the door in your picture. The original STC had a double latch that was connected to a door handle that you twisted to get both latches to engage. (That was issued in 1961 and apparently the owner is now longer with us). Mine has a single spring loaded latch. The piston holds it open and in flight it, if open, it does not contact the wing, based on the adjustment of the piston and arm. Let me know if you would like me to E-mail you a copy.
Regards, Bob
P.S. - Here is a picture of how the door looked when I first got the plane.

Re: Seaplane Door
Thanks, I would love a copy. Are you able to hand prop from behind the engine? Are you able to open and close the door in flight? or do you need to leave it where it's at once you take off?rkittine wrote:Hi,

Thanks, I will go over it with my IA as soon as I get it.
Re: Seaplane Door
Hi David,
I just E-mailed you the docs and some information. I do prop from behind and can easily reach in for the primer, mags, throttle etc. since there is no blow back to close the door as there would be on a conventional door.
I have never opened or closed it in the air. I have taken off and landed with it open, but started out that way.
Ciao - Robert

Re: Seaplane Door
I am posting a picture of my seaplane door. This seems to be different than the ones shown above. I've sent the 337 to someone but can't remember his name. I can send copies if anyone has an interest.
Re: Seaplane Door
Someday I might buy that type split / clear seaplane door. I understand that it is available new from the New Champion Aircraft company.

Re: Seaplane Door
Several people have written and asked for a copy of the 337 relating to the seaplane door of which a picture is posted above. I now have a package of the 337 and detailed pictures of how it is made. I have sent packages to all members that I can remember. If you want one, and didn't get one, please send me an email.
Re: Seaplane Door
I would love a copy of the 337 for the Clear Seaplane Door arrangement.
