Aviation Instrumentation iPhone Apps

Post by rkittine »

Although not a legal replacement for any instruments, I have purchased the DG, Altimeter, Artifical Horizon, wind vane and other aviation related apps for my iPhone.

My altimeter and vertical card compass work great, but my turn coordinator is not very good. At $.99 each, the iPhone apps are great. The Artificial Horizon is the best so far. Get into the air, get straight and level and hit Zero and away you go. With the other instruments working well and those in my GPS, this is the only one I really need, though Wind Vane is really good as it gives you the current wind velocity and direction for your current GPS location.

Robert,

With all that instrumentation one has to ask: Is that old bird also equipped with a hot plate and de-icing boots??? How much ice will a Champ carry?

Just kidding.... Neat ideas

That's way too much information. I get confused by the little thing in the dash that swings around and is supposed to tell you which way to go. Anyway, my wife tells me that any trip over 10 miles is a cross country for me and if I lose sight of the airport, I should come back.

No Hot plate, but I was trying to get a refrigerator in!

Some day I will get good enough flying this thing to throw everything out. I do like to take long flights to new airports (for me) so the added instrumentation is a help. I am so used to the Garmin 530W in my 182 and 340A that I can't find the next airport without electronic help.

I've been flying my planes for years and wouldn't think of going anywhere with out the MAP option installed.

I tried to add my 12 volt printer, my Touch Pad and my Jeppesen Chart subscription, but then I couldn't see out the front window. Guess Lindberg went farther in that condition then I could .....

All the electronic stuff is fun...(I've got a Lowrence 600C in my flight bag), but I can't imagine needing anything other than a map for distances < 100 mi from home.

On the short flight, I leave it all in the hanger.

How much ice will a Champ carry?

A small bag of cubes and a 12 pack of beer in a foam* ice chest

*light weight
