You're really screwed now. The worst thing you can have is a ASI that thinks he knows something about airplanes. Just have them stick to the regs as they are written, not how they interpret them.

Actually Gregg Horrell who he is working with is one of the few FAA types who knows dope and fabric. He currently owns a 7FC and has restored several 7AC's, so he knows Aeronca's. I have known Gregg for almost 10 years and he is a good guy, one of the few working for that organization.

Once they drink the "Kool-aid" they all look the same. Generally they use their knowledge for enforcement actions rather than assistance. I hope I'm wrong but this isn't my first rodeo.

Isn't it true that alot of these old crates have blemished paper trails? IE: My 195 Cessna's records, according to the FAA when I asked for them, said they had been lost in a fire! One thing is certain, the more things YOU bring up, the more trouble it will cause you. There is a certain analogy with the flat spin! The so called "inspectors" , with many pencils and pens and clip boards can really cause havoc. People like Paul, usually know one that is knowledgeable and wants to help rather than hinder. My pal, an AI, knew one and he SAVED my 195! and saved me thousands of dollars. The one before him wanted to take it back to factory standard! JP

We don't hold that against him all that often. I dont know about the lower 48, but most of the ASI's up here have been very helpful. ASI's are like cops if you are not doing anything wrong they cant do anything to you. I know there are some out there that are out to get you and wont stop til they do. I have found that if you are respectful to the position ( not the person) most gov't types will be more willing to give you help. Gregg has been really helpful on a lot of my problems. He just helped keep a military L-16 around. just my .02

That's kind of my point. They shouldn't be thought of as cops, they should be an information center. If they find a problem the ASI should be able to direct you back to the correct path and assist in straightening up the cause.
I don't know about AK but locally the ASI looks for an issue that they can send you a registered letter on. Now, I've only been doing this 35 or so years so there is hope changes can be made.

I agree about the information center. It's unfortunate that there are too many ASI's out trying to prove they are holier than God himself. I guess I have been blessed to work with the few good ASI's out there.
