Charles,
Some of these Cats can be over $1000 bucks and theft is a big problem here in CA.
This society, I believe, has made it to it's destination. We are living in the decline of a civilization. My suggestion is to have at least 1000rds of high power 7.62x54 and a like amount of 7.62x39. An autoloader of 9MM or larger is great for a "throw away".

If i found some under my truck stealing mine id hand him a sawzall. after 180000 miles i think its about plugged. paul your right on that russin ammo. and a 1910 maxim just to run them off. Bob
Bob,
What's great about those weapons, 7.62x54, they'll fire anything you find. 30/30 .308, 300 Win. It distorts the case due to the head space, but you're not thinking about reloading in every circumstance.

I live out in the sticks, and have pretty alert neighbors; but some terd ripped the ground wire off all the phone poles. After that, I put motion lights on every corner of the house.
Make sure you have clips and magazines for all that ammo; a thousand rounds in a box doesn't help much.
I love my Mosin Nagants... As well as my Mausers and other military guns (1911 is my favorite, I sleep just six inches above one every night)....
Anyhow. I was buying some guns and things from a young gunsmith a few years back. He knew I was into the 7.62x54r... So he hands me some strange looking rounds... He says "I got these with a bunch of old stuff I bought, they must be blanks, they are super loud".
Turns out they are grenade launcher rounds.....cooooool

I live with fear every day... Sometimes she lets me go flying...
I moved from Colorado after I retired 6 years ago to rural SE Iowa to get away from so much crime. Since I've lived here a son murdered his father a mile SW of my house, while he was in jail the house mysteriously burned down. Then earlier this month a shootout a mile SE of my house cost the life of a Sheriff's Deputy and later the shooter. Had more police around here that at a Duncan donuts convention. So there are never less than 2 or 3 guns of .357 or .45AP within easy reach, and a whole slew more in the vault. During the shootout, which by the way, I didn't know exactly what was going on except I knew it was BIG. I had a 30-06, Mini-14 in .223 and my 1911 all close at hand.

In a urban environment, heavy rifles (like a 30.06 or 7.62x54, 308, etc) and heavy pistol calibers like 45 acp, 45LC, 44 mag, 357 mag and even 9mm para... all have the potential to pass completely through your home and injure some innocent neighbor or bystander.
Considering that, I suggest a small shotgun loaded with light shot. Sure, it will tear up your house a bit, but at close range, they are very effective against a man size target. A short barreled .410 is a fearsome weapon at close range, and a one shot man-stopper as well. Its wall penetration is far, far less than heavier pistol and rifle calibers.
Just my 2c worth.
The front of our house faces a fairly busy highway and the back a large swampy woods. I woke up one night and saw all kinds of folks with flash lights around our house. Called the cops and they said they were looking for a criminal that had bailed out of a car around our house. I said better check my shop as it wasn't locked but the guy wasn't in there so we went back to bed. My wife said, "You know I don't really feel all that safe" so I told her I'd get my pistol which was locked up in the gun cabnet. Hmmm! Couldn't find the key.....found the key.....couldn't find the ammunition . Finally found everything but I told her if the guy had shown up earlier I'd have to tell him to wait around so I can shoot him . Normally, I kept all the guns and ammunition locked up when the kids were around as I didn't want any accidents.
