Re: mechanical brakes
Dave,
On my '41 chief the cable goes through metal conduct pipe welded to the back of the landing gear. The cable then is attached to the brake clevis assembly, which is on the back side of the landing gear so that cable is protected from grass and weeds by the landing gear.
Mine are lousy brakes.
Once I saw a guy replace the shinn brakes on his 8A luscombe with hydr. brakes. I asked him where he got the stc for a better brake system and he replied he didn't. He just did it. His elderly Dad said that in the old times they just landed in open fields and didn't need brakes except for runups.
A Spokane GADO guy told me he would field approve a hydr brake system, but I haven't figured out how to use the pre-war heel pedals to activate the brakes and what type of system. Any ideas out there?
Richard

Does the Wag Aero Hydraulic brake kit work approved for the Chief?

Re: mechanical brakes
The brakes that I have, have a pully mounted to the housing, that the activation cable runs through. I think mine are Vansickle/cleveland. But thanks for the help. If you decide to add hydro brakes to your a/c, I'd makeup some toe brakes.
Thanks
Dave

Believe that they are for the post-war versions only. Not saying that Dave could not make them work and then do a field approval, but it would not be as cut and dried.
