Sensenich Metal Climb Prop ?

Post by akchamp »

Has anyone flown a 65 hp Champ with a Sensenich M76AK-2-40 climb prop?
The prop is legal, but would the pitch be a problem? Obviously, I'm not too concerned about speed, but don't want to over rev the engine. Should I have the prop repitched?
Thanks.

That's such a tough question, just because it's a 65hp doesn't mean all 65s are equal.
Here's an example, my 65 chief would only turn 2000rpm with the 74-44 it came with. I had it retwisted to 74-42 & it spun up to 2250-2300rpm, no loss of speed & much better take-off. I then built an exper T-Crate. While the T-Crate's prop was away getting twisted (it came with a 74-45  ) I used the Chief prop, granted the 65 Ts motor had a ventura & jetting change, it was still not that much more than 70hp. It would spin that 74-42 to 2450 & really jump off the ground. When I put the Ts original prop back on, now a 72-42 it would spin to 2500rpm performance improved again.

So back to the original question
"Should I have the prop repitched?"
My advice is put it on & try it, I think it might be the cats as...butt, especially if your working off short fields or tend to fly 2 up a lot.

All in MHO!!! & worth every penny you paid
Let us know how you make out.

I have a 7AC with a cont. A65 that I overhauled to a A75 and I had a sensenich W72CK44, it didn't do much, cruise was ok,but I expected more, so I got a sensenich W70DK40, climb was good but cruise sucked, so I found a sensenich metal 74DK44-4 cut down to 72" dia. put it on the champ and it was like magic! it performed great in climb and cruise (90-95) I called sensenich at their metal propeller plant in Pa. and spoke to one of their engineers and told him the "prop-story" and he said the metal prop was ok, it was certified for a A65, so I put the timing back to 30-30 (thats just 1 degree each way) and no difference in performance, I still had the A65 engine data tag, and without a A75 data tag (plate) from contenental factory it's still a A65-8. btw, there are two 85 hp 7AC's on the field here, my champ can climb and cruise right along with them. FWIW.

Thanks guys. I'll install it in the near future and let you know what kind of performance I get.
