What happens to 337s?
What happens to 337s?
Aeronconians -
Yesterday I mailed my two autogas 337s (airframe and engine) and door-removal 337 to the FAA. So what happens now? Do I wait until the FAA notifies me that I'm good to burn autogas and fly without the door or can I get going right now? I've heard that STCed 337s sort of disappear into a cloud without a word.
Thanks,
- Ron

Re: What happens to 337s?
You're done. Just keep the flight manual revision in the airplane and the aircraft copy of the 337 and STC in your paperwork and you're good to go.
Re: What happens to 337s?
If you haven't purchased the CD Records for your airplane from the FAA, it is worth the $10.00 and if you order it now, it should show your 337 in it. There is over 100 pages of good information on the goverment CD for my Champ. You will know then what is in the FAA records.

Re: What happens to 337s?
ron can i ask where you found the door removal stc ? and how hard is it to have it regstered to your airplane. iam looking for one also. but dont know the prosess to go about it . thanks Bob
Re: What happens to 337s?
I looked under AC105-2C and they list the STC as SA33CE for the 7 series. So I looked on the FAA website and that STC is available for everyone. So just run a copy of the STC, install the required placard and have your A&P/I.A. make a 337 and weight and balance revision. When that's done go get your hair messed up flying in the breeze.badger bob wrote:ron can i ask where you found the door removal stc ? and how hard is it to have it regstered to your airplane. iam looking for one also. but dont know the prosess to go about it . thanks Bob

Al,
How many of these 'open' (for lack of a better term) STC's are lurking out there? It does seem that eventually the holder of the STC dies or (??) and unless the estate holds the STC which is apparently the case in the Buzz Wagner 0200 STC, the STC is difficult to apply. Maybe it's not an issue but it seems to have come up before.
Coffee is still on in Strum on Saturday mornings.

Al thanks for the info. i did run across a guy in mich that has stc.s for the 7ac and the bellanca.s. it also list my 7aca. so i may go that way. thanks Bob
Re: What happens to 337s?
About the only way you can tell is to go to the FAA website and look up the STC number. If the FAA has the copy available it means the certificate holder has given the FAA authorization to release the STC to the general public. That is what this Scott Johnson from Michigan did for the door removal. I'm sure the reasons vary, for a company like Brackett it would be a monumental waste of time issuing an airfilter STC to each specific airplane. They make their money selling the filter, they don't care who has the STC. For this Scott Johnson, who knows? Maybe he doesn't care about money, just doing something nice for everyone.MikeB wrote:Al,

Don't be afraid to use the Scott Johnson STC available for free, he gave the FAA authorization to release it to the general public. Maybe he doesn't want the hassle of sending it out every time someone wants it.
Good luck and have fun.

Thanks to all for responding. I appreciate the help.
BadgerBob, you asked about the door removal STC. The number is SA33CE and it belongs to:
Scott Johnson
234 Dexter
Milan, MI 48160
For $50 Scott mails you the STC paperwork and an aluminum sample placard that says stuff like don't do spins, keep it under 100 mph (hell, I don't think my Champ even goes 100 mph), don't smoke, stay out of precipitation, etc. I bought my STC in February 2011.
I recommend that anyone with a Champ who wants to double the fun buy this STC and yank the door off. Of course you can do this without the STC, but the way I see it, $50 bucks is worth the peace of mind to know my paperwork is in order in case I go down in a bean field and the NTSB and insurance company start asking ugly question.
FYI, STC SA33CE was originally A-759 and AC21CE. It covers about 15 7-series and a couple of 8-series airplanes.
Scott is a good guy, super easy to deal with, and very responsive.
Also, there have been other posts on this site about flying without the door so you might want to search for them.

Re: What happens to 337s?
Well damned if STC SA33CE hasn't in fact been surrendered. Outsmarted by a bunch of cheeseheads -- that hurts! Maybe I'll see you guys in Strum.

He is a very nice guy and Aeronca owner. We need to support him and what it took him to get the STC in his hands.badger bob wrote:I called scott 3 weeks ago and hes a great guy he ansered all my questions. i think that ill go with him when i git ready. thanks guys. Bob

I agree with supporting anyone who develops an STC. If we don't, folks will be discouraged from jumping thru all the hoops on behalf of our community. $50 is a bargain!
