Re: Hydralic lifters
Dave,
I'm not sure I would. While I have seen each style used in the same model engine, I still haven't had the Moxy to inter-mix them.

Re: Hydralic lifters
Two more questions. 1. I now have two sets of lifters. A long set that came out of the engine I'm rebuilding. They are older. I also have a short set that are almost new. Can I use the short lifters in the original lifter bodies?
2. I have no idea what length oil pressure spring to get from Fresno Airparts. I didn't get one with the engines I bought. Any advice on what spring to buy?

Re: Hydralic lifters
Dave,
I have set up the lifters in the 21608 body, both put the cup at the same location. I believe the long hydraulic unit is the 21609 which was replaced by the current 531694.

Thanks Paul. Any advice on the oil pressure relief spring?

Re: Hydralic lifters
Dave,
I would use the 21352 of the A65-8. The other listed spring is for the A65-12 engines which have a different back case.

Re: Hydralic lifters
Thank you so much. I learned something today. The crank is on it's way back form ECI. I'll place an order for the bearings, front seal and the spring.

Dave,
Are you doing anything with the block? Only ask because the cam bores seem to be worn (especially in the front) on the A series engines and causes a low oil pressure reading at the gauge. Probably doesn't hurt a lot as everything (rods, mains, etc.) are lubricated on the left side of the engine. You can change springs and shim to your hearts content (don't ask me how I know) but generally doesn't solve anything once the oil temperature comes up and the oil thins out.
I think the usual fix is to surface the block halves and rebore or refit an oversize cam.

Re: Hydralic lifters
Sorry to take so long to answer Mike. Yes, Divco took care of the case.
Let me explain. I bought three engines for $1000. Obviously a lot of parts envolved. One engine was disassembled without a crank. There were no carbs and one engine had a pair of Bendix mailbox mags on it. The disassembled engine appeard to have a good case. Later there were several cracks found in the webs. On to the next case. I had it cleaned and did not find any cracks. That is the case that went to Divco. The crankshaft out of that engine went to ECI. The rear case off of the disasembled engine looked really good as did the oil pump gears. All measured within specs. I bought five bad Stromberg carbs and got one rebuilt useing all parts from various carbs and some new parts. New pistons were installed in reworked cyl.
The only thing left is a set of mags. I am looking for some now.

Thanks Dave,
Just wondering as so often folks forget about the block or don't follow through on the cam bore wear.
I wound up having to buy new Slicks for my engine.
