correct prop for a 7aca

i have a 1971 belanca champ with a contential a 65. right now i have a sensenich wood w72ck 44 installed. on a hot day at gross it bearly get off the ground poor proformance. i've been told to put a metal 74ck-0-44 prop on. is this the correct one to use or what should i use?

Dan i also have a 71 7 aca with a a65 f. mine has a flotorp 72X48 ( it may have been repitched) its a minor dog on hot days at gross. theres some outher champs around hear. one has a 72X44 the outher one has a 72X42 and all run about the same. if I had the chance id put a 72X44 on mine but mine is a little heavy compared to the outher ones around hear. To pull the full 65 hp out of an A-65 ( or any engine for that matter ) , you need to be able to turn close to red line at climb speed . Metal props will give you better performance , wood props will seem a bit smoother if balanced properly , but have more maintenance and care issues , especially if they live outside . 72ck 42 in a wood prop will give slightly better climb , a 72 ck 44 slightly better cruise , but if you can't get close to red line on climb there may be engine issues . The Aircraft Specifications will list approved props and Charlie Lasher's prop listing will likely confirm cruise props vs climb props . The metal props seem to be able to carry more diameter due to their thinner airfoil than their wood counterparts , but anything over 44" pitch would seem to be more than the A-65 can turn

For whatever it's worth all three of the A65/7AC Champs on our field have McCauley CM 7443 metal props on them. I'd suspect they would be the same for the 7ACA although you'd have to check the type certificate to be sure. The props seems to perform well with the A65's although on a hot day it seems a 42 inch 'bite' might be better for climbout to altitude. They all seems to cruise right around 85 mph. One we changed from a wood prop several year ago because of poor performance but I'm unsure what the prop specs were.

Easiest solution would be to sell your plane and buy mine. It has a relativly low time O-235 and has no issues on a hot day.....oh, and it is still LSA eligible.

A C85, C90, or 0200 will give you the performance you are looking for, and still not greatly influence your empty weight and/or useful load.
