Cub-like gas cap
Cub-like gas cap
So, does the Cub gas cap with fuel level indicator work on the Chief tank? It's getting harder and harder to read my little dash top fuel indicator. Mine's a 1946.

Re: Cub-like gas cap
I found a old Cub cork and wire cap that fits my Champ perfectly. It is the one I use now.

Hi Phil:
I am in Granbury,Texas. Where are you located at? I have the float wire set up, and a Gauge, in my 7DC. I feel the float would work on your chief, I have a rear tank in my champ and I've been testing it's function, over the weekend, I can tell the fuel transfers with the float before the gauge even responds I think its the gearing in the gauge, has alot of slop. I was able to clean my gauge so I could see it, a lot clearer. A fellow flyer Sunny

I'm in central Texas, near Georgetown. Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll order one and see how it works. And I'll also try to clean the regular gauge better. I've given it a desultory swipe or two, but it needs some TLC.
Can I just order that cap at Univair or Aircraft Spruce? Are those the same as stock?
The transfer from auxiliary can be very slow to register, can't it? I have to be a little nose-down for it to flow well, and it seems to stop once the main tank is about 1/2 full.

Re: Cub-like gas cap
I have one I made from a gas cap I matched with my Chief original at Napa. Problem is that the float from your original gauge will conflict with the float from the new cap. And if you remove that original assembly, then you will need to figure how to plug the big hole. Maybe I'm missing something easy and someone else will have a better idea.
Re: Cub-like gas cap
Well, that slows me down. I don't know how the original float works in the tank or what kind it is. Can't really see down in there, and I've not seen a drawing of it, unless I've missed that in one of the diagrams I have in the various "manuals" I've gathered on the Chief.

Hi flyer" Phil:
Look you can replace that entire unit It's a Model A fuel indicator, Mac's out of New York has the entire unit, Even a Brass float, That is bought extra, and you replace the cork unit.Just go into the innernet,( www.mac's .com) there catalog is on line, You will have to get a tool kit to install it, But I will send you mine, its just 2 wrenches, but it makes the installation so simple. all of the seals are there, and I ordered my Vented fuel cap from Wag-Aero , very nice I modified it with the snorkle, It has a hard seal in the cap. I use fuel lube on that seal, it will last for ever if you use the Fuel Lube. I looked at the caps in the parts houses, cheap and flimsy, The Wag-Aero units are high quality, made of steel, not stainless. You will need a vented cap. Good luck, A fellow flyer Sunny

Re: Cub-like gas cap
Hi Everyone, When we got our Chief, it came with a wire float gauge and we used it up to the point of recovering. It worked great since we cannot see the actual gauge in the tank either, and since our chief is still down upon the last tidbits I am deciding whether to "try" to remove the original fuel tank gauge and replace it? What would you do since the original is really really on there, I am looking at cutting it off in pieces? Is it worth it?
Thanks,
Michael
Thanks,
Michael
Re: Cub-like gas cap
hEY Mike: It is so easy to replace it, Sounds like some body put 2 part epoxy in the fuel gauge, Had some mechanic do that, I used epoxy paint stripper, and slowly cleaned it off, It took a while and I lost money on the job. The old model t gauge works really nice, earlier in another post, I still have the wire cork and gauge assembly on my AC. Place a pipe wrench on the housing, and use a 6 point 1/2 inch socket, with a 30 inch breaker bar, That is what I had to use to get that puppy off, totally crazy!!! and that was after I used the 2 part stripper. Wish I could see what you have there, A fellow aviator Sunny

Phil,
I don't intend to pursue this with my Chief but please let us know on the forum how the new part works out and any uninstall/new install problems you encounter. It is a great help to other forum members when project completions are posted in detail. Thanks.

Hello brink,
Thanks for your reply, The header tank had a 3 inch crack originally at the neck of where the fuel gauge is at when we got the plane, it was covered with just about every imaginable concoction possible to prevent leakage. Upon recovering the plane, we removed the tank, cleaned it up and had it welded, then right after we epoxy primed the thank but I will do as you suggested with the paint remover and hopefully that will work. I am heading to the airport so I will take some photos for you, can you PM me your e-mail so I can send larger photos for your review?
Thanks Again,Talk soon,
Michael
