stringers

I am restoring a 1946 chief and have stringers made of Douglas Fir. The drawings say poplar spruce or yellow pine. What would you recomend and how do you get them to bend over the cabin area soak them?

I made the new stringers for my champ out of poplar. I used poplar because it is readily available in this area and I had some in my shop. The stringers were bent in place dry without any problems. I applied epoxy varnish after they were installed.

Douglas Fir is an acceptable replacement for spruce - slightly heavier and stronger. If yellow pine is acceptable and strong enough, it probably would bend easier. Not nearly as strong, tho
