Sky-Tec starter clearance

Just (finally) hung the engine on the Champ. I have a C-85 mounted on the original 65 (short) engine mount. I was under the impression that the Sky-Tec starter would fit (with minimal clearance). The starter is touching the firewall, and although it is hard to tell, I think it is pushing the firewall back a little bit? Has anyone else tried this combination? I'm thinking I might need to build a small box to attach to the inside of the firewall (after cutting a hole in it).

Hi Brian,

When we hung the C-85, we used a new engine mount and there wasn't any issue with the low profile Sky Tech Starter. BUT the low profile alternator, had an issue. In order to solve that, the people selling the alternator provided a template for Banging an indentation into the fire wall to allow for the added depth. So you might want to try that or cutting it out and riviting on a small covering "Cup" over the relief area.

Try a new set of rubbers in the mount, and make sure you don't over torque them. If it's still too close add a washer under the mount attachment to space the engine further forward. Use as little as you can get away with, Champs are nose heavy anyway.

Agree with Paul, it may be necessary to add a washer (or so) under the mount to move the engine slightly ahead. In the case of 0200 I used adapters for the conical rubber mounts which gave the starter clearance to the firewall. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. With the old long Delco starter it was common to put a 'dishpan depression' in the firewall.

For some reason my old A65 had 1/4 inch thick washers between the engine mount and the rubber conical mount. Without the washer the prop was against the nose bowl.

I think the long mount was something like 1 1/2" longer that the standard mount so a washer or two to provice the proper clearance shouldn't hurt anything although like Paul says "Champs tend to be nose heavy" so no more than necessary for clearance.

It should, as there is a little wiggle room. If it has a flange shaft it's no problem, the taper shaft runs pretty close.
