1943 O-58B Acquisition

Post by Doc »

I have just acquired 1943 O-58B SN O58-11123, N47185. It had been upgraded to a C85 (after removing the illegal Continental 0-200 and all automotive acoutrements (wires, switches, fasteners, etc.)). It is now fully airworthy. Any comments from O-58 / L3-B owners would be appreciated. Thanks Doc

Doc,
It's a nice little airplane, I've got a couple of them. With the C85 you're gonna need more fuel, there is a STC for wing tanks in the military models but not for the civilian models. It won't go fast but the C85 should make it go up.

I am restoring a 65TC, which is similar to the O-58B. I will be installing a C-85 and will install two 5 gallon wing tanks. My wing is uncovered (but not restored) and you can look at it to see what will be involved in installing new tanks. You are welcome to visit anytime. It is on Lot #8 at San Geronimo Airpark in San Antonio.

Jerry: I plan to be at the EAA Chapter 35 dinner on the 10th. I hope we can meet then. BTW, N47185 has a 4.5 gal (placarded 4) right wing reserve tank with a total of 16 gallons...the plumbing is very interesting. GW 1300#. This aircraft was released from US Government service in 1944 and began civilian life as NC47185 in MN. Doc

Photo taken reflects a January South Texas mid-winter late afternoon. This aircraft is mis-numbered on the tail as the previous restorer did not do his homework. The Smithsonian confirms that the correct number was 43-26975 (326975). The aircraft's entire military service was in Ohio from Sep 1943 - Sep 1944 according to the military service card provided to me by the Smithsonian archival unit. The RCA trailing wire reel is missing...and the recent E-Bay posting for a RCA reel went for over $1,000.00!!! The current engine is a putative C85 with O-200 crank, cylinders, pistons, etc. provided by Don's Dream Machine. It is very low and slow, and a delight to fly. Doc
