First post here. My son and I have a 41 ca65 and want to install a c-85. Anyone have info on paperwork needed? We have engine and exhaust and engine mount, need paperwork to get started. Thanks
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place-plenty of views but no answers.

If I recall correctly there is no STC for the pre-war. But there is for the post war.
I had checked into it several years ago, for our pre-war Chief. (I wanted a "self starter")

So what do I do, go ahead and install and then a 337?

Re: c-85 in a 41 ca65
The pre-war's are unfortunately an orphaned airplane. Not much info out there, and usually only found with other pre-war owners. Because there's only a couple hundred (maybe) out there, the demand for mods has always been slim and subsequently done with field approvals. If you can track down an airplane that had a C-85 installed prior to 1956, that 337 can be used as approved data and be golden.
I'm afraid getting a motor approved today would require a good bit of luck with the right fed.
Not that I'd ever do anything against the FAA and all-great wisdom, but you might have to get creative, and accept a little risk vs. reward.

Hi,
I recently hesitated and missed the purchase of two Pre-War Chiefs, both with C-85s. One had a -8 with no starter and one had a -12 with with a starter, so they would cover both types between them.
The one with a C-85-8 was owned by Robert G. Smith I will PM you his address and Phone Numbers
The one with the C-85-12 was owned by Belle Haute (I think that was the last name) It was stored at Brown's and they knew the airplane (I went there to see it) as well as her and they can provide her contact information.
Since these were recent sales, I am pretty sure you could track down who bought these two planes and get a copy of their paperwork for the engine installations..
Good Luck - Bob
