Turf runway compilation
Turf runway compilation
Does anyone know of a computer based compilation of just Turf strip airports available to the public ? I try to find and support this kind of operation whenever they are in the direction of planned X-c's. Many times they are not manned or don't have fuel etc but there are others that qualify as real gems. At least in Pa & Ny.

I'd like to see a list too. I think some of the private strips are basically open to the public, just not advertised as such. Ours is an example (3WN9). Basically it's a 'use at your own risk' as we don't have insurance. I think that's probably the case with others too.

I used to fly my Champ in your area. Some nice grass strips near you are: Great Valley N.Y. no gas, 3000 feetX60. Resturant reported closed. Dart Airport, Mayville, N.Y., resturant is no more. Gas MAYBE -100 octane if someone is around. South Dayton, N.Y. (Good Cheeseburgers) Gas? not sure. BrokenStraw airport, just west of Warren, Penna. Nice strip but gas only to members unless someone is around.(weekends lots of gliders around.) Flea market at Dart on weekends, with hotdog stand. Jamestown,N.Y. municipal airport at bottom of Lake Chautauqua has 100 octane, hard surface, two runways. Hope this helps. JP

Re: Turf runway compilation
Just for the record, I'll add the grass strip parallel to the main paved strip at N38 which is usually available. 100 LL available to Credit Card customers. Manning is, like many low usage airports, irregular but makes a place available at a public airport. The Pa. Grand Canyon is nearby off the end of RWY 28 and makes an interesting half-hr. tour.
Also, the public airport at KELM (Elmira, NY) has a grass strip. This is a TRSA place but if you have radio communication, a hospitable stop at an Urban area. Check the NOTAMS for usage.
I am aware of several really nice strips in southern Pa. which are really nice. I'll hold off on posting about them to see if some members who are closer or perhaps resident there don't offer some help.
I am also going to contact the AOPA to see if there is some way to conduct a search for Turf strips on their Airport listing. the EAA is pulling out of Aeroplanner so don't rely on it as a source.

We have one paved - 21 / 3 and two grass 21 L / 3 R and 26 / 8 hear at Warwick. No restaurant, but usually have a group that goes to lunch every day at 11:45 and there is always room for a few more. 100 LL, self serve with credit card at the airport. 123.0
Lots of Grass Strips or Grass / Paved in the down-state New York Area. Those that have Sail planes usually allow landing on the grass with caution. Randal, Wurtsboro, Blairstown, Pocono etc.
Maybe those of us that are interested could volunteer to take parts of a sectional and research (I have Jepps Electronic Charts) airports in an area and update which private ones with grass stips allow people, which are open etc.
I spend a lot of time just flying to new Grass Strip locations.
A few others
Argyle in Argyle New York
August Field just south of Glenns Falls, New York
Kline Kiln
Lewis Landing
Gurnseys, next to their seaplane base.
And the list goes on and on.

Re: Turf runway compilation
I am pretty sure there is a site that lists a lot of turf/back country type strips. I had it in my favorites before my computer went tits up!
You can browse this site: www.shortfield.com even though most of the ones listed are probably in the western US.
If I can remember of find the old site I had for my reference I will post it.

Re: Turf runway compilation
So, let's make this a project. We have lots of tail wheel friends who are interested in where grass runways exist. We have such friends in many states. All we need is a team leader in each state to collect the data, verify it (by yourself or through others), then keep an Excel spreadsheet which we can post somewhere and keep it updated. I'll volunteer to start with Illinois since I've been flying my Champ a lot in that state. When I get the list finished, I'll share it. Anyone have an idea where we can post these for all to see and download? I'll plan to complete the Illinois survey by 9/10/2012. Any others want to volunteer for a state, post it here.
And those who have data on Illinois turf runways, send me an email.

I am happy to do New York, or a portion of it. Think we can attach Excel files here as I know some sites allow that.

Re: Turf runway compilation
Another NICE grass strip is at Clarence, NY, near buffalo. NICE taildraggers based here and many of the pilots very very knowledgeable. This is very near where the airliner crashed a few years ago.
