rear fuel manifold location
rear fuel manifold location
Can anyone tell me where the rear fuel manifold goes on my 63 7EC with 26 gal. wing tanks. The book parts book is not detailed enough to show exactly where it goes. It mounts with an AN742 clamp so it would seem it goes on one of the fuselage tubes, but where?
Re: rear fuel manifold location
Jeff,
Your manifold is clamped to the lower cross-tube on the aft side of the baggage bay, toward the left side of the fuselage so that the fuel drain valve extends past the fabric once it's covered.
I'm rebuilding a '60 FC/EC and have been incorporating a bunch of mods from more recent airplanes. I live pretty close to American Champion and they've been great about letting me take pictures of partially constructed airplanes and selling me parts. One of the mods is to move the manifold higher, attached to the diagonal tube directly above the lower one. This keeps the larger fuel lines shorter and they run a copper line from the manifold down to the original exit point in the belly and put the fuel drain on a fitting down there.
I'll try to send a picture. If you need more info, PM me.

Re: rear fuel manifold location
American Champion (and Safe Air) drawing 7-1102 shows the installation of the 26 gallon fuel system. The drawing basically shows the same details as the photo above. This drawing was issued by Wag with their 26 gallon fuel conversion kit. They also issued drawing 7-10002. There are also about 10 small related drawings that Wag did not issue, but that Bill Pancake gave me. One item that Bill was insistent upon when I installed the 26 gallon system on my Champ was that the line that goes from the left side of the rear manifold must run downhill all the way to the front manifold without any loops or dips that could create an air pocket. Apparently an air pocket in this line could prevent the proper flow of fuel from the rear to front manifold. I have scanned the two large drawings but the scans are far too large to transfer via email. I plan to eventually get them into the NAA and museum drawing collections.
