Shinn tires/tube question

Post by Aerco »

I was playing around with some tubes and tires (Air Trac 6.00x 6) to see how they would fit on my Shinn wheels and my conclusion was; not very well.

The tubes (no idea what manufacturer) have a fairly long bent valve stem, but still not long enough to reach through the wheel rim. Does anyone know of a tube with a valve that does? These tubes were cheap, but seem of perfectly adequate quality, compared to the $50-100 you can pay for "aircraft" tubes.

Or is there some kind of valve extender out there? I can find them for bicycle valves, but haven't seen any for regular valves.

Also, the 6.0 x6 tires (Air Trac, regular airplane stuff)) I have, which fit perfectly on the 6" Azusa rims from a homebuilt project seem very narrow and don't fill the rims. The Azusas are 4" across the inside of the rims, the Shinns measure 5".

What are you guys using out there on these wheels?

Peter,
The Air Trac will go in but they don't protrude like you expect. Only the threaded portion of the stem protrudes, held in place with a thin brass nut. There is a hole in the wheel center to help you align the stem using a finger.
