BRAKE INSTALLATION PICTURES

Post by hammmike »

Does any one have good pictures of the cable brake installation under the wood floors n a 7AC. Rob Grove is going to start working on a hydraulic brake conversion for the champ. He is going to get my champ and measure up the fuselage tubing measurements in October. He already has the wheel, brakes and all the assorted parts designed machined and on a shelf. Now he needs to design the master cylinders and mounting hardware for all that. I told him I might could get some pictures for him to look at before he gets here to get some idea of how he wants to build it. He hopes to have it built and STC done by next year.

I know you're going with hydraulic lines and not cables down the legs, but I wouldn't run the lines down the front of the legs near the top. I would run them down the back side so you can come out the belly fabric instead of interfering with the boot cowl. My cables ran down in front and they were always a PITA when working with opening and closing the boot cowl. You could run them down like in this photo.

The following link is an article that I wrote on the installation of hydraulic toe brakes on my Champ: http://johnpropst.yolasite.com/resource ... on%20h.pdf

This site also has a field approval for installing the Toe Brakes and a 337 for installing the new wheels and hydraulic brakes: http://johnpropst.yolasite.com/

Thanks for all the info and pics. I am sure this kind of info will be a big help. He is talking about a no weld installation and a big differance in cost to the existing conversions available now.

Any update on a Grove brake STC? Would it keep the heel brakes or go to toe brakes?

It will keep the heel brakes. He is still working on the kit. I think they are installing a prototype in a Champ now and will be testing soon.

I don't know about the prototype, but we tested the actual Grove parts yesterday, and the owner is raving. He says the difference is "dramatic" and "there is no comparison".

We simply routed the hydraulic lines out the same hole as the cables, behind the axle tube attach point. The axle tube has a clamp on top, and a small tube at the bottom. We used these two places to clamp the hydraulic line, to the rear bottom of the tube.

Installation simply could not be easier - hardest part was getting the cables off the rear pedals. That took about a half hour and two small holes in the fabric.
